I was woken early by my cousin, Dudley Dursley, banging hard on my bedroom door, shaking it on its hinges. "WAKE UP COUSIN, WE'RE GOING TO THE ZOO!" He shouted through the key whole before running off to wake up my slightly older brother, Harry. I sat up and sighed. 'Of course..' I thought as I numbly stood up and ran my hands through my jet black hair. It was his birthday and, as per usual, he was going to be spoilt and my guess was that he, and his rat-like friend, Peirs Polkiss were going out somewhere amazing. I didn't usually have a problem with him but Peirs always pushed his luck and leered at me, smirking. It took all of my strength not to hit him at times. I peered at myself, flattening my creased top against my stomach. I wasn't large but I wasn't skinny. I smiled lightly to myself and got dressed, smelling the bacon downstairs.
I glanced at myself in the mirror again and sighed. I felt bad for Harry as he only had hand me downs but I've always found myself as a tomboy and I heavily enjoyed wearing jeans and leggings but of course, my aunt insisted that I act ladylike even though I was anything but ladylike. I stumbled awkwardly down the stairs, not ready to face the day. Harry smiled weakly at me and aunt nodded approvingly at me but uncle didn't even look up and Dudley only had eyes for his numerous presents. I stationed myself beside Harry and started washing the dishes from yesterday, getting as little water on me as possible.
"Father father father, now may I open my presents?" Dudley pleaded with his father, acting as his soft, sweet self. I scoffed quietly as I knew he was just a rude, spoilt brat. Harry looked up at me and we shared a grin, holding our breath and trying to not burst out laughing at the simpering version of Dudley. As I dried my hands and flipped the coloured pancakes I overheard Dudley complain about the fact that he didn't have as many presents. I glanced over and noticed his bottom lip quivering and I sighed, not daring to say anything sharp or sarcastic. Aunt had sat down on the armchair, stiff. "They can't stay with Ms. Figg. She's broke her leg." She said, her voice sounding unusually high. I coughed excitedly and muttered to Harry.
"Does this mean we're going to the zoo?" I asked, quivering. But my voice was drowned out my the sound of Dudley's wailing as he blubbered something about not wanting Harry t go as he would always ruin things. I laughed and said that he wasn't wrong and he punched my arm playfully.
The doorbell rang and I went to answer it and, as I expected, it was Peirs.
"Hello Peirs." I said stiffly but he just smirked at me in reply. I let him in and unsurprisingly Dudley had stopped crying and was chatting happily with Peirs who stood cooly, leaning against the wall. Aunt flinched but said nothing, holding her tongue. To distract herself, sh turned to me.
"Go and change." She said it quietly enough but I knew she wasn't messing around so I ran upstairs and slipped into a white dress and a cream coat.
I shivered as I got in the car, thinking about wait uncle had said to me. When Peirs and Dudley were comfortable and we were just climbing in he pulled us out again and scolded us for something that we didn't do... yet. We always seemed to mess things up whenever we went out in public. But it was going quite well. Harry and I got a lemon lolly, cheap but delicious, as the ice cream lady asked what we wanted before we had a chance to be pushed away. Then there was when Dudley claimed that his knickerbocker glory was too small and uncle gave us his and let me tell you now, that ice cream was amazing! But of course, Dudley got a giant one. But that didn't break my spirits, it was too late for that now.
Soon, Dudley got bored of the zoo and now wanted to see the reptiles in the 'reptile house' before we left for home. Aunt pushed us lightly into the reptile room behind of Dudley and Peirs, who had some sort of 'authority' as it was his birthday so he was allowed to go in the front. Harry and I peered at the turtles when suddenly from behind us Dudley claimed he had found the largest snake in the room. Everyone (Harry, me, Aunt, Uncle, Dudley and Peirs) crowded around to get a peek but I was rudely shoved back so I stood watching a chameleon until Dudley and Peirs got bored of it. Then I came over and crouched next to Harry, my heart beating at the sheer size of it's body. I looked up to see Harry smiling at me, slightly concerned as I had apparently turned a shade of pale green but I just smiled back, showing I was fine and turned back to the snake. It had now opened its eyes and Harry and I almost.. Had a conversation with it? No, that must sound crazy to you but it's true! We found out that it was bred captive meaning it had never even seen Brazil, it's place of home. It almost.. reminded me of Harry and I.
Suddenly my head hit the ground and I felt blood in my mouth so I guessed that Dudley had found that the snake was moving. I stood up and brushed myself down, hoping that Aunt hadn't seen as she didn't approve of falling over, even if you were pushed. I looked over at Harry who seemed to be concentrating on something when I heard a yell and turned to see the glass had disappeared and the snake had climbed out of the 'container' it was in and slithered away.
