Teach Me to Pray

~Prologue~

"Now, repeat after me. Asato ma sad gamaya," the Brahmin paused and opened his eyes. Sabrina Palmer, was kneeling next to him in front of a traditional and very sacred shrine to lord Shiva. Her eyes were shut, yet it was obvious that she had no intention of repeating after the holy man. The Brahmin cleared his throat and Sabrina's eyes snapped open. " I said, repeat after me," he told her in his thick Indian accent. " Asato ma sad gamaya-From ignorance lead me to truth." Sabrina closed her eyes again and took a deep breath. She was about to say her first Hindu mantra, a type called a Navra from the sacred Hindu text Brhadaranyaka Upanishad.

"Seato ma sad gamaya."

"Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya-From darkness lead me to light," the Brahmin continued.

"Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya," Sabrina took another breath, and, after repeating the line, she slowly opened her eyes and peeked over at the Brahmin. He was still sitting with his eyes closed.

"Mrutyor ma amritam gamaya-From death lead me to immortality." Sabrina quickly shut her eyes as the Beaumont said the last line in the short prayer.

"Mrutyor ma antitank gamaya," Sabrina repeated. When she was done, she broke into a wide grin.

"Congratulations, Sabrina, you have said your very first Hindu prayer,"the Brahmin said, opening his eyes and standing up off of his mat. Sabrina also scrambled to her feet.

"Thank you. Thank you for teaching me to pray."
