CHAPTER 27:

"You have to go now! I can only hold them back for so long," Celtic shouted. I glanced around and surely enough there was a wavering barrier of white light. Ray was trying to kill everything that came to close and Lizzie was still dieing. "I'll take care of her, Mister Vasquez. I'll heal her but you must go now."

Not waiting for my response, he pushed me through the barrier and Ray latched on to my arm. We fought our way out of the mansion and dashed across the lawn. A car was parked as promised right across the street. Theo was pacing anxiously until he spotted us and unlocked the doors. We all piled in with Theo trying not to stare at Ray's appearence.

"What are you waiting for? Drive!" Needing no further instruction, he hit the gas and we took off down the street. "Head for downtown." She gave my brother the address of our destination, telling him which short cuts to take in order to get there faster. My heart was in my mouth and I felt queezy glancing down to see myself covered in blood that mostly wasn't mine.

"What the fuck happened back there?" Theo demanded to know as he drove far above the speed limit.

"Jacey summoned Shadow Walkers which means her magic is no longer pure as it used to be," Ray dismissed shaking her head and trying to get the four inch talons and extended canines under control. Her eyes were still completely blacked out.

"Wait, Jacey Green? Jacey Green who throws parties with the weird hair is a witch?" Theo shrieked narrowly avoiding a couple crossing the street and flipping us the bird.

"Yes, but I thought she was someone I could trust after all these years. Apparently, she's the one who's been trying to assassinate me for the last couple of months while I was relying on her to help keep me under the radar," Ray grumbled looking at me, "Not to mention her extraordinary hate for your bloodline. There's a pretty price on your heads."

"I'm calling Cole. If they're bold enough to take . . . Lizzie . . . then what's to stop them from harming my best friend? Especially after everything he's already seen whether we swipe his memory or not," I said whipping out my phone and scrolling through my contacts. Ray snatched the phone from me and I gave her an irritated look.

"Bringing him back into this will only make matters worse, and so far he's safe," Ray countered holding my phone out of reach.

I was about ready to literally fight her for it when a black SUV collided with our small car. Glass shattered and I threw my arms up to protect my eyes and face. We slid off of the street and onto the sidewalk, the two vehicles now conjoined like a set of Siamese twins. Theo's face slapped into the airbag and Ray dug her talons into the metal roof. My leg banged violently against the dented door where we were hit and I was stuck. Unsnapping my seatbelt, I moved to shake Theo's shoulder. He groan and lifted his head as the airbag deflated.

"Where the fuck did the SUV come from?" he groan rubbing his neck and unbuckling his seatbelt.

I turned my head to see a beaten up Jacey climbing out of the driver's side. Her nose was oozing blood and there were a few cuts on her arms and legs. It was clear that she had just barely dodged Celtic's fatal blows. Like a drunk, she stumbled out of the SUV and leaned against it with determination in her eyes. I could hear the sirens going off in the distance and a few other cars had stopped or slowed down to watch the scene. Ray opened her door pulling my arm to follow her.

"You have to go," she stated taking in Jacey's appearence, "Get out of here. Your brother's injured and Jacey's half dead. There isn't much time."

She used her superhuman strength and pulled me out of the car. I had to take the weight off of my left leg, the adrenaline barely enough to keep my mind off of the pain. Jacey narrowed her eyes on me just as Ray rounded the car standing her ground. I limped my way towards the street not knowing how I was going to get there but knowing that I had to. I didn't want to leave my brother but he looked worse than I did and I trusted that Ray would protect him. Jacey was weaker than her.
