EmiliaMrs. Grey stood in the doorway, a black folder clutched in her manicured hand. She entered the room silently, closing the door behind her with a soft click. Leaning against the wall, she fixed me with an icy stare, her eyes roaming over me in deadly silence.
Her calm composure terrified me more than any shouting could have. My inner voice reminded me harshly: You just attempted to abort her unborn grandchild a few hours ago. You should be more than terrified, Emilia.
"What was the plan, Miss Clark?" Mrs. Grey finally broke the silence, her voice dripping with disdain. "You thought you could get rid of my grandchild and get away with it?"
I stared at my feet, unable to meet her gaze. That had been exactly the plan.
Summoning what little courage I had left, I whispered, "How did you find me?"
Mrs. Grey let out a cold laugh. "I had surveillance placed on you. Did you think I would allow a lowly girl, possibly carrying my grandchild, to wander around the city freely? How stupid do you think I am?"
I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "Are you going to kill me?"
"And what would I gain from that?" She replied, her lips curving into a cruel smile. "I have something better." She thrust the folder towards me. "Open it."
With trembling hands, I took the folder and began to read its contents.
"This is Star Enterprise, my mother's workplace," I muttered, confusion evident in my voice.
Mrs. Grey moved closer, her expensive perfume filling my nostrils. "Star Enterprise has recently become Grey Enterprise," she said, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. "And according to the company's financial statements, your mother owes over eight hundred thousand dollars."
I gasped, covering my mouth in shock. "That can't be right. There must be some mistake."
"I don't make mistakes, Miss Clark," she snapped, her confidence unwavering. She perched on the edge of the bed, her eyes turning cold and hard. "I'm not inherently a bad person, but when it comes to protecting my family..." She paused, letting the tension build. "I can be the deadliest force you've ever encountered."
Finding a spark of defiance, I dared to ask, "Why are you doing this?"
Mrs. Grey's smirk widened. "I plan on filling a lawsuit against your father, in fact, my lawyers are on the way right now to serve her the papers." Her voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "I'll destroy your family, And that's not even close to what I'm capable of when I believe I've been crossed."
A chill ran down my spine. How could anyone be this cruel and emotionless?
"So, the next time you try to pull a stunt like the one you just did today, think of your family," Mrs. Grey continued, her words as sharp as knives, "Have I made myself clear, Miss Clark?"
Tears welled up in my eyes. "Please," I begged, my resolve crumbling. "I'll do anything you want. Just don't involve my family. This is my fault, not theirs."
"Are we clear, Miss Clark?" she repeated, her voice echoing through the room.
I nodded frantically, no longer able to hold back my tears. How did I get myself into this mess?
"Good," Mrs. Grey said, standing and smoothing her designer suit. "Freshen up. There are clean clothes and towels in the drawer. I'll have the maid prepare something for you to eat."
As she turned to leave, I mustered the courage to speak once more. "I want to go home."
Mrs. Grey paused at the door, her hand on the knob. "This is your new home, Miss Clark. Try to get comfortable." With that, she left, the door slamming behind her.
As soon as I was alone, I sank to the floor, finally allowing myself to break down completely. Sobs wracked my body as the full weight of my situation crashed over me. What had I done? And more importantly, what was I going to do now?
