A DAY OF SCHOOL

part 1. the incident

"MISS LIGHT, DO YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO QUESTION NUMBER 7?" ASKED MRS WARREN LOOKING directly into the grey eyes of the young fifteen-year-old girl.

Devonne Light's mind wasn't paying attention to the class being imparted before her. Not at all. Her whole focus remained on the screen of her phone and the words being written on it. The phrases she was reading didn't quite satisfy her as much as she expected they would, after all, they have agreed to Mr. Toomes' requests. The problem was that the offer they had accepted already wasn't the one she needed, not if she wanted to keep 10% of the benefits secretly. And so she was quick to answer the messages in a very rusty Afrikáans imploring the desire of the seller in more money and hoped that would do.

By her side, sitting in the second row of the Physics classroom, Flash Thompson observed how the girl kept herself distracted even under the bothered glances Mrs. Warren was sending her. His eyes moved in between the two females, opening more and more as the seconds passed by and Bones -the blonde girl's nickname- hadn't raised hers from her phone. He knew she was reckless but ignoring Mrs. Warren, the teacher who liked to sarcastically demolish the students that didn't do well in her class, was suicidal.

"Miss Light? Do I need to repeat myself?"

"Psst, Bones. Mrs. Warren is calling you out."

It was the voice of Flash that woke her up -and probably the fact that he elbowed her pretty hard on the ribs area- from her daydream. Her grey eyes lifted from the device laying on her hands and after reading the whiteboard in front of her she concluded Mrs. Warren required the answer to number seven. "It's twenty-five point seventeen meters per second." The response Bones gave the teacher was brief and efficient for the woman finally left her alone to do as she pleased once more. And so her eyes went back to where they were mere seconds before.

Her relationship with Mrs. Warren was one of understanding. The girl did as she desired as long as she didn't bother anyone in the class and remained to have the high scores she had. It no longer surprised her classmates -except for Flash, who still wasn't over the fact that she wasn't scared of the teacher- and they all acted with normalcy.

The lesson went on with Mrs. Warren explaining the right use of forces when in an exercise of a pendulum and soon she was asking the students a question once more. "Okay, so how do we calculate the linear acceleration between points A and B?" Her eyes moved through the students and landed on Flash, whose hand has raised as fast as the question had left the mouth of the woman. "Flash."

"It's the product of the sine of the angle and gravity divided by mass."

"Nope." Another hand was raised in the back, but the dark eyes of Mrs. Warren were already set upon a distracted Peter Parker. The boy's face was hidden behind his computer, which projected a video of New York's very own superhero: Spider-man. "Peter." His head lifted quickly at the calling of his teacher and a look of being caught red-handed could be seen on his face. In front of the boy, to Flash's surprise, Bones' eyes left her phone to turn their attention to the brunette sitting behind her. "You still with us?"
