Jay
The first time Jay stepped on ice, he fell unceremoniously on his butt.
(Granted he should have watched where he was walking and would have seen the ice cube on the floor.)
The second time, he managed to at least glide for a longer time than the rest of the class.
(This time on actual ice rink with the intention of stepping on it.)
By the third time, he was already whipping past everyone in his age group, skating lap after lap for over an hour. He was enjoying the adrenaline, the way he could speed about without the fear of falling. It seemed more elegant than when he was in shoes than when he's in skates. It wasn't until a man approached him did he realise how talented he was.
The man asked him if he'd like to try and learn a jump; curious Jay followed the man's instructions. He stumbled the first and second try. Jay was able to perform an axel on the third try, executed perfectly after he mumbled where he went wrong. It was like an unstoppable snowstorm had been born.
He found out the man was one of the local coaches in figure skating. When he offered Jay for private sessions, he agreed since he found it fun. Jay would later on be called a prodigy on ice, performing and perfecting stunts and jumps with envious grace in a matter of weeks. People always egged him on to try our for the team, his coach offering good spots and great rewards.
All he wanted though was to have fun. Ice skating had given him freedom in elegance that his tall, lanky self can't seem to do when walking. So he turned down each time, until he met them.
