Chapter 1

Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep-Beep!

I groaned as my droopy eyelids fluttered open, and I clenched my hand into a fist. I then punched the button on the alarm clock that has a picture of a bell imprinted on it. The annoying beeping, constantly ringing louder and louder, now ear-splitting, stopped. I violently kicked my smooth sheets off, and rolled over, so that my body was facing the huge window in my room. The dazzling sunlight streaming through the window, forced me to squint my eyes. I just lay there, smiling, grateful for my extra sleep, and the sunlight warming me up. I was enjoying my sleep, until I heard thumping on the hard, wooden, floor. The thumping was now so loud, that it could wake up the dead. The thumping now sounded like footsteps of someone I knew. And that someone was Dad. He bust in through the door, and the door almost fell down. He stomped into the room, and his stomping, could seriously make this whole apartment collapse.

“Wake up now, Yuuko,” he roared in a deep, gruff, voice. I whined, “No… Just a few more minutes-“

“NOW!” I mouthed fine and jumped off my wooden bed, as Dad stomped out of the room. And after he left, my room was shaking for a few moments. While the room was shaking, I just stood there, waiting for it to stop, and it finally did. I started approaching my bamboo dresser, and yanked a drawer open. I scanned the drawer, and my eyes focused on my school uniform. I snatched my school uniform, and slowly pushed the drawer back in with my foot. I started changing, and in about a minute, I was done changing, and tidying my outfit after I put it on roughly. I stared at my pajamas, messily folded, and placed in the second drawer of my dresser. I thought for a moment. I bet mom would yell at me for putting my pajamas away like that. So, I took them, and folded them again, this time nicely, and neatly. Then, I gently placed them in the drawer, and closed it. I smiled with satisfaction while twisting the rusty doorknob. I walked out of my room, and trudged through the dim hallway until I reached my destination, the bathroom.

I flipped the light switch on, and I stared into the old, dirty, mirror, and my reflection stared right back at me. As always, my hair was perfect. Every single black, silky strand of hair was in the right place. So I always assumed that I wouldn’t have to brush it. My face though, was a different story. It was a total mess, a total disaster. I reacted to it, and fumbled, trying to get the soap. Clumsiness got the best of me, and I knocked over all the lotions, hair products, and sprays. I finally got my hands on the soap, so I swiped my hands on the soap. Then, I sealed my eyes shut, and rubbed the soap on my face. Next, I turned the faucet on, and let the cool water wash my face. I was done now, so I opened my eyes, and wiped my face softly with the towel. I glanced at the mirror, and I was good, and ready to go to school. I walked towards the door, and before I walked of the room, I remembered to turn the lights off. My plan afterwards was to find my backpack, but I just recalled that I left it at school, in the gym locker room. I sighed. I was going to be punished for sure. I didn’t even get to finish my homework! Instead of finding my backpack, I decided to get my phone. I was at the door now, and my phone was charging on top of a small table next to the door. I pulled the charger out, and grabbed my phone, and shoved it in my pocket. I opened the door, and yelled, “Bye Mom! Bye Dad! See you after school!”

The door shut closed since I kicked it, and right when I stepped outside, the disgusting, polluted, smell of the city filled up my nostrils. It was like poisonous gas. Ever since I was little, I’ve always hated this smell. I started to walk down the pale, stone path that lead to my school, Kodona Academy. I gazed at the sky that was no longer a bright, beautiful, blue, but now the sky is covered by dark, gassy, smoke. And all of the animals seem to have left this city. And the trees seem to have bit of a loss in color. Their leaves weren’t littered with vivid flowers anymore. Their leaves are now more of a darker color. The city can truly affect nature. New message. I turned my phone open and started texting my friend, Miki.
