It was a warm day, but the stillness of the air was unbearable. My stomach was in knots. I turn 16 today. And as the deal proposed on the day of my birth I had to formally meet The Elders about my 'anomaly'. My brother, John, was normal. He had blonde hair and deep blue eyes. I, on the other hand, was far from normal. My eyes were an emerald green, never seen by anyone before. My hair was a fiery red, and my outfit was a charcoal black shirt and pants. Nothing like the rest of my society.
I hear my mother walking down the stairs of our commonly seen house. She was wearing the outfit worn by everyone. A porcelain white shirt and eggshell white pants. I felt blinded by the shear reflection off the outfit.
"Come on Elyra, we must leave now to arrive on time."
My mother was very punctual, a trait not uncommon within the society.
We hurried out there door into the standard four- door sedan everyone had. And not to mention, it was white.
My mother arrived at the grand building early. I looked at the marble flooring and the huge pillars extending from the roof to the floor. The clock struck noon and we walked into the building. The door creaked open and the smell of old wood wafted up to our noses. There were five people that seemed to be looming above the two chairs set out for my mother and I. They were unbelievably uncomfortable. As we sat we heard the old, scratchy, voice of Miriam Chester, the head Elder.
"Mrs. Elyra Hamil, the reason why we have gathered you here are as follows, you are not the same. And for our society to remain glorious we need to be the same. Differences can kill, honey. That's why we need to fix you.
I thought about those two words. fix you. Was I broken? I didn't feel broken. I felt, human.
