I was sitting there thinking about those words. Those insignificant two words. Fix you. I was thinking so hard I didn't hear Miriam yelling my name.
"Ms. Hamil. Ms. Hamil?!"
"Sorry, yes?"
"Do you except the conditions we have set forth?"
"Yeah, um yes." I had no idea what I just excepted.
"Great." she said sinisterly, "Your assimilation will start today. Say goodbye to your mother."
"Mother, I love you and father. But, I don't want to leave. I will miss you."
"Elyra" she started to shout, " Do not change. They will control you and yo-"
She was cut off. Men came in and took her away from me.
"Mom?! Mom!!!"
I started crying and I didn't even notice the men behind me until the grabbed hold of me. They took me to a bus. I was alone and crying. I figured they were taking me to the assimilation camp. Everything happened so quickly it was all a blur. What was my mom talking about, being controlled. Was that what they meant by being fixed? Fixing me so I could be controlled. And she was just like them, why was
she not controlled. This is what I thought about the entire ride to the 'camp'.
The camp was huge. There were five or six large buildings, three or four small buildings, and a large area that seemed to be for recreational use. I was focused on the land when the men started to yell at me to exit off the bus. I walked toward the gate of the 'camp' and pushed it open. There was a large creaking sound. I was guided through the camp until we arrived at one of the large buildings.
There was a portly woman sitting across the aisle from me, behind a shield of glass that separated us. I was taken up the aisle and signed in.
"Miss Elyra here needs to be checked in."
The woman spoke with a nasally voice that drove me crazy.
"Okay, I have the paperwork for a Miss Elyra Hamil."
The man took the paperwork and
signed me in. The normalcy of this moment was freaking me out. My mother just got taken away, I'm being changed. Normalcy sucks.
