Chapter One - Through the Barrier

I heard a knock on my door.

"Come in," I mumbled while trying to read my favorite book, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

My older brother, Scott, sauntered in with a smug smile on his face.  He was only older by 3 years, yet he acted like he was 5 years older than me.  Scott takes after my dad, who is white.  He has light brown hair, hazel eyes, and pale skin.  I on the other hand take after my mother, who is Pacific Islander.  I have dark brown hair with natural red highlights, medium brown eyes, and tan, really tan skin.  Our appearances are only the same in size and weight.  We are both naturally skinny and medium height, not too tall.  Our personalities are similar, we both are book worms and are pretty smart.  We like to always be right, and are quite stubborn.

"What do you want?" I didn't even look up from my book.

He didn't say anything, instead he put a letter addressed to me on top of my book.

I would have yelled at him for bothering me on a normal occasion, but this was big.

It was my Hogwarts acceptance letter.

"Well, what are you waiting for? Open it!" He ruffled my hair.

"Okay, okay," I said while trying to conceal my excitement.

I carefully lifted the red seal and pulled out a cream colored letter.

"Lena Elizabeth Thompson, you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," I read from the letter.  I squealed.  This is what I have been waiting for since I was five.  My parents' old school: Hogwarts! My father's a pure blood and my mother came from a muggle family. They were both in Ravenclaw house.  When my brother went to Hogwarts, he was sorted into Ravenclaw without question.  The same thing was expected to happen to me.

"Oh my gosh," I squealed, "OH MY GOSH."

Scott laughed, "Well you're excited."

"No, I'm totally not," I punched his arm.

He smiled, "Bet you're going to be in Ravenclaw.  Thompson family tradition."

"Well of course, like I'd be anywhere else."

*Flashforward to King's Cross Station*

"You expect me to run... through a brick pillar?" I was baffled.

I had never went with Scott and my parents to drop off my brother on the Hogwarts Express.  I had been at day care or school or whatever.  Scott had conveniently forgot to tell me about this specific detail.

My family laughed.  "Lena, it's okay, just follow me," my mother grabbed my hand and led me through the portal and carried my new tawny owl, Stryver, and his cage in my hand.  I closed my eyes, but I could still feel Kings Cross vanish behind me as I entered Platform 9 and 3/4.

The Hogwarts Express was  beautiful.  It was a jet black train with hints of red.  Kids were already starting to board.

My parents hugged us goodbye.  "Remember to have Ravenclaw pride you two," my dad told us.

"Yes dad," my brother and I said in unison.

My mom hit my dad's arm, "We love you," my dad said while rubbing his arm.

We waved goodbye as we stepped onto the train.  I thought my brother would stay with me as we found cabins, but of course, he ditched me to join his friends.  What a great brother I have?

I was looking out the windows and walking down the hall at the same time as I ran into a girl carrying an insane amount of textbooks.

"I'm so sorry," I said while helping her pick up her books.
