FLASHBACK: five weeks earlier
Lauren pushed back a stray lock of hair and stared up at the Departures screen at John Wayne airport. She was running late and was worried she would miss her flight to Austin, Texas.
"Lauren! Over here!"
Lauren turned. There she was: Mikayla Bryer, the famous lifestyle blogger of Bryer Rose Farm. Lauren felt her face flush. She couldn't help but feel a little excited at meeting one of her Instagram idols. She hoped she didn't look like a crazy fan girl.
Lauren waved at Mikayla and then grabbed the handle of her carryon bag and rolled it over to Gate 4. Mikayla was all smiles as she opened her arms and happily embraced Lauren.
"Lauren! It's so good to finally meet you in real life!"
Lauren hugged her back, feeling a little overwhelmed. After all, Mikayla was super famous on the Internet and Lauren was only a little famous. Sometimes she couldn't believe that Mikayla had friended her.
"This is my husband, Dex," Mikayla said, swinging around to introduce a man who sat nearby.
Dex looked up and met Lauren's eyes. Lauren sucked in her breath: he was absolutely gorgeous. Dark hair, olive skin and eyes the color of a stormy sea. He wore a button down linen shirt and jeans. As he stood to shake her hand, Lauren wiped her own hand on her skirt, hoping her palms weren't sweaty.
"Ah, the famous Internet sensation, Lauren Winsley!" he said, reaching for her hand.
Lauren felt herself blushing. He knew her name?
As soon as their hands touched, Lauren felt a surge of electricity course up her spine. She tried to smile casually.
"Nice to meet you," she said, her voice shaking a little.
And then Dex smiled and Lauren felt her heart leap into her throat.
Then he said something so unexpected—it was the first of many times that he would surprise her—that Lauren found herself speechless.
