"I'm a huge fan of your work," Dex said.
"You are?" Lauren laughed, completely taken by surprise. "My stats tell me only married women ages 29-45 are interested in my stuff."
Dex shook his head. "What, they didn't tell you that handsome men aged 18-24 are also super into your Instagram feed?"
This time Mikayla and Lauren both laughed. Mikayla playfully slapped Dex's arm.
"He WISHES he was in the 18-24 age range," she said. "But really he's just jealous that we're receiving Top Internet Influencer awards from FORBES! and the only award he's ever received was Student of the Year back in middle school."
It was Dex's turn to laugh. But it wasn't a happy laugh. It had an edge to it. "Wow," he said. "Way to make me feel like a hero in front of your friend."
Mikayla rolled her eyes. Lauren felt suddenly uncomfortable, as if she were witnessing the iceberg tip of a long time feud. She wondered if Dex and Mikayla's marriage was as strong and happy as it looked on Instagram.
"Let's go get a Starbucks before they start boarding the plane!" Mikayla said. "Dex can you watch our stuff?"
Dex gave an overzealous thumbs up. "That's what I'm here for, to serve your every whim!"
His sarcasm was obvious.
"Come on," Mikayla said, grabbing Lauren's arm and moving toward the Starbucks. "Just ignore him."
Now she was certain: Mikayla and Dex's marriage was NOT what it appeared to be on Instagram. She was about to find out how bad it really was.
