The next morning I awoke in a state of terror sweat was protruding down my fore but fingers insisted on being cold as winter ice. It felt as though there were hands gliding up my arms then resting on my neck taunting me as if they ready to strangle me and steal away my breath. I got out of bed and got ready to have a cold shower, I got my clothes ready and got the shower ready. I jumped and shivered at the sudden cold but I adjusted quickly. There was something bothering me, like a quiet knock on the back of my head trying to remind of something. I started to think about yesterday wondering about the house and Clarice, was she alright? Yeah of course. I laughed to myself bitterly, knowing that something wasn't right but I had to let it go for now.
I went downstairs to find my mother reading the newspaper at the table probably waiting for the kettle to finish boiling, but it was odd because this was never something she did often, in fact, she only did it in times of stress. I began to think what got her like this, she didn't look too well either. There were intense grey bags under her eyes which were darker than usual and come to think of it her face seems unnaturally pale. I made the decision to ask her what was up.
"Morning Mum, are you okay?"I asked with concern lacing my tone. She didn't reply at first which started to make me anxious, something was very wrong.
"Jack have you heard from Clarice lately?". Oh god is it something to do with Clarice that has her like this?
"Um no, why. Mum, did something happen?" I asked inquisitively.
"Baby, she went missing last night around 11:30". With that, my face felt like the colour began to drain from my face. I began to think what could've happened to her. It dawned on me that she must've gone missing at the house. Could she be....? No, she couldn't be. I pictured her happy and smiling she always had such a big smile. Clarice was a beautiful girl she had long dirty blonde hair that always cascaded down her shoulder because she complained that putting it up didn't suit her, she was taller although I was older and her eyes were the most vibrant green you'd ever see, they could put you in a trance.
I had to go back to that house find answers, to find Clarice. I realised I got caught up in my thoughts as mums voice pulled me back to reality. She asked if I was okay and of course I wasn't but I had to show I was fine so I just replied with a simple "yep" and continued to the kitchen to make breakfast which usually consisted of toast and a piece of fruit.
It was awfully quiet that morning when we were at the table. Dad had left for work so it was just mum and I. I wanted to create a better atmosphere as I hated silence while I was with my parents but it was too tense so I kept to myself.
"Mum I'm gonna run out for a bit I promise to be back around 3" I yelled out to her catching her attention and her head snapped up to me.
"You be careful please Jack, I don't want you to go missing either right?" She shouted back a little fretful, I understood that she didn't want to lose me because I was her only child but I also had a life and anyway I wanted to check up on Ms. Royce.
I nodded a quick yes and rushed out the door. I headed down the road going to Clarice's house. What would I say to her? Would she blame me for not bringing her home? Oh god. Tension was growing inside me and eventually my steps slowed and I thought about it for a moment. I became anxious but decided to just go with it and just walked on.
I arrived at the Royce household and knocked on the door, after hearing muffled voices behind the door it opened to reveal two police officers and Clarice's parents. I quickly stepped back as the officers came out, they eyed me suspiciously as if I was suspect they were trying to figure out. Turning to face Nina and Mason they looked troubled, I wondered what had happened. Mason spoke up first.
"Oh hey Jackie what are you doing here?" He asked surprised.
"Oh um I just wanted to come by and ask how you ar-" I trailed off, thinking this might've been a bad idea when I saw that Nina was quietly sobbing. Her husband walked over to her and console her while I just stood awkwardly at the door fiddling with fingers.
"That's okay dear but we're fine, I'm sure she'll come back soon" Nina softly said to me but the tone of her voice was cold and sad. She looked hopeless and lost because just like my parents they couldn't afford to lose their only child. I really feel like I shouldn't have come around. Without warning a high pitched screech was heard and I started to double over with my hands over my ears crying out in pain but when I looked up back at Mr and Mrs Royce they were unphased as if it was never there.
