He doesn't ask for my name, help me, or even ask if I'm okay.
He didn't even apologize. Even if I was the one at fault, I still said a quick "sorry".
I get through first period without anymore incidents. I take a quick glance at my schedule and realize I have an hour before my next one, so I decide to go buy a book I'll be needing for English and grab a coffee.
After about 45 minutes, I decide to head across campus for my next class. When I check the building, I realize that I only had 45 minutes between classes, and that my second period was starting now. I would be at least 10 minutes late.
After I run across campus, I bolt through the main entrance. As I get to the door, I take a minute to slow my breathing and put myself back together. I slowly open the door to the lecture hall! finding about 600 eyes staring at me.
One pair stands out to me, and I hate myself even more for being late.
I see Brandy, the leader of my sorority. She stares me down, and I feel so much worse than I did already about being late. I needed to make a good impression, and this was far from that.
"I assume you are Adelaina Haywood?"
"Yes. I'm really sorry."
"Why don't you go sit in the back with your fellow tardy student."
I made my way up to the back of the hall. Just when I thought the worst was over, I see who my professor was referring to.
I sit down, making every attempt I can to avoid eye contact. Of course, it doesn't work.
"Looks like people find out who you are pretty quick too."
"Shut up. I'm never late. I missread my schedule," I say, looking directly forward. I don't want to converse with him. I barely know Dave and he is already pushing my buttons.
"Well, Adelaina, it looks like you already made yourself a name as a delinquent," he smirks.
Normally, I would deny this, but that's what he wants, and I won't give him that satisfaction.
"First of all, don't call me Adelaina. I hate my full name. Second of all, you don't know anything about me. Maybe I am a delinquent."
"You just said you're never late."
"Being a delinquent doesn't mean being late, Dave."
All of a sudden, I look up and see the professor staring at us.
"Ms. Haywood, Mr. Weston. I take it you wish to be partners then?"
Shit.
"Umm...yeah I guess," I stutter.
"Don't sound so excited, Adelaina."
He has that stupid smirk on his face again.
"I'm excited at all. I would have picked a random stranger over you. And I already told you not to call me Adelaina. I hate it."
"That first part is bullshit and we both know it. As for the second part, what do you go by?"
I wanted something that I had never gone by. Something different.
"Adele. So when are we going to work on this project?" I sigh. Why him. Today is just not my day.
"Whenever I'm not busy doing something more interesting."
"Fantastic," I spit.
When I get back to the house later that night, I discover that the sisters are choosing official roommates for the pledges.
"Okay, Adele, since you and Paisley seem to both be late frequently, I've paired you up together," Brandy says with a sarcastic smile.
"Oh, no I'm not usually like that. I misread-"
"Well things are settled," she snaps, "go find Paisley. She's excited to see you."
Maybe this girl is like me and just had a bad day. Maybe she isn't all that different from me.
As soon as I walk in, I know I'm very, very wrong.
