amy walked down the sidewalk, further away from the lawson's george worked at. she couldn't believe what he just said, how could he say that? did he even mean it?
"come on, you're my best friend. your like- you're like a sister to me." the words rang through her head over and over again. yeah they were best friends, so why did it hurt her that he said that? why was it stuck in her head?
a few minutes later, she was sat at her porch, her earphones plugged into her ipod, playing george's song on repeat. amy would listen to it all the time since that night, minutes before her 13th birthday. for the past 4 years, whenever she was in a bad place, she'd listen to it and it'd immediately calm her down.
except now, all it did was make her cry even harder. she didn't even understand why. she just felt like crying and screaming and leaving.
after the 6th repeat, she finally managed to stop the tears running down her cheeks and put her ipod and earphones in her back pocket.
she went inside and continued her months long uni search work, needing to get her mind off of what had just happened an hour ago.
amy and george were officially graduating in a few weeks, so university prep was everywhere.
they had decided to search for unis together one night, few weeks ago, and made a pact to go to the same university together. it only made sense, "to keep their friendship alive."
"how ironic." amy thought now.
they had a set 3 universities in australia, 2 in the us, and a few in japan. which they kept as their backups.
that night, they had applied to all 5 universities together, writing each other's essays for one another. they talked a lot that night, unaware that that was going to be the last time they actually talked in around a month.
george and amy hung out at his place that night, under the stars in his backyard. they grew too big for the tent, so they just sat on the porch of his backyard door.
with her head on his shoulder, amy watched while george typed up her essay to the 4th university they applied to.
"—not only is she hardworking, but she also works with a passion. amelia margaret—" george spoke while he typed, until amy hit his shoulder.
"hey!" she called out, giggling at how he mentioned her old auntie middle name.
he chuckled and tapped delete a few times. "amelia is a smart, talented young woman who you'd be lucky to accept into your university." george continued typing, speaking with a lower, calmer voice as amy rested her head back on his shoulder.
"her beauty and witty comebacks will hold you captive in awe. the aura she puts off radiates through all her work, leaving no one unimpressed. the amount of persistence and care she directs towards everything around her can truly make a man fall head over heals. the way her hair curls in the wildest ways, how she chews carelessly at her bottom lip when in concentration, how her voice can calm you down, yet make you want to jump out of a fucking moving car is baffling," he slowly came to a pause and cleared his throat.
"accepting amelia dennen would be the utter best thing to do for your university. you would not regret it." he added a period and rested his hands at the sides of the mousepad.
