“I’m scared,” I admitted as we were walking up to the doors of the school.  I could see teachers sitting at a table just inside the doors taking tickets.  Aidan draped his arm over my shoulder and held me close to him, and it sent shivers down my spine.  There was just something about having a strong arm hold you close to someone you really care about, and being close to Aidan like this made an unrequested smile come to my face.

“Of what?” he questioned.

“This is going to be the first time I’ve seen and talked to Isaiah since the break up.  He’s going to be crushed that we’re together.  And I haven’t told anyone that we’re dating, so Persephone is going to be pissed when she finds out we’re going out and I didn’t tell her,” I pointed out.

Aidan held me a little bit closer, and it made my heart skip a beat.  The smile came back to my face.  A cool breeze rushed through the entry to the school, making goose bumps rise on my skin.  He noticed and wrapped both of his arms around me while we waited in line to keep me warm.

“It’ll be okay.  Don’t worry about any of that.  Stuff happens.  Just have fun.  You only get one Homecoming a year,” he pointed out.  I nodded my head and rested it against his shoulder while the line moved agonizingly slow.  We finally made it into the school and got our tickets checked about five minutes later.

The gym looked awesome.  Whoever had decorated it went to a lot of work to make sure the theme—Jungle Fever—had taken over the entire room.  Animal print balloons swarmed the walls and floor of the gym, being hit into the air by dancing students and catching the light from the DJ’s systems.  Colorful lights flashed on the wall from the frame above the DJ and illuminated the black and white zebra print streamers that ran along the ceiling.

The gym had two levels.  The first level was the gym itself, and the second level was a track that looked out over the gym.  Tables and chairs were set up along the track, with snacks, drinks, and just a place to sit down and leave your stuff.  Loud music pulsated through the room, and the temperature was noticeably warmer.

“They have a horrible music selection at these things,” Aidan said as soon as he heard the generic, Top 40 song that was being broadcast through the entire room.

“That’s because they’re playing what the masses want to hear.  Not a lot of people want to hear something like Foo Fighters or screamo at Homecoming,” I pointed out.

“I know.  I’m just saying that the music sucks,” he replied.

I looked around for Persephone and found her sitting up on the track with Brady and Isaiah.

“Hey, I’m going to go see my friends.  They’re upstairs.  Want to come with?” I offered.

“I see Samantha and Evan.  I’m going to go talk to them for a minute and then I’ll see you, okay?” he said, glancing over my shoulder to the two people coming out of the crowd.

I looked over to find both of them looking amazing.  Evan wore a blue shirt and black pants with a brown tie that complimented the outfit perfectly.  Samantha had all of her hair curled with gems woven into it.  Her dress was a gorgeous shade of purple.  It stopped at her knees and was strapless, covered in glitter.  I fell in love with it the moment I saw it.

“All right.  I’ll meet you down here in a few minutes,” I agreed.

I ran up the stairs to see Persephone, Brady, and Isaiah.  As I approached, Persephone had a death look on her face, and I knew I was screwed.  I would be even more dead when she found out I was dating Aidan.  Time to start apologizing and pleading for her to spare my life.
