Start of another boring day. 8 in the morning and Cassie was already behind the bar of the diner. It was tough being up at 6am every day to prepare everything, but it was a decent job all things considered, and it paid well.
There were a few people sitting at the tables already. A mother was trying to restrain the destructive impulses of her two kids while finishing her cup of black coffee. It was the third since they had entered. A fat trucker was sitting at the end of the bar, eating a plate of pancakes, his eyes glued to the tv... Typical morning.
The young woman was wiping a coffee stain off of the counter in front of her when the familiar tinkle of the bell at the door rang out. She didn't look up immediately, but still greeted the newcomer.
"Good morning! Please make yourself comfortable, I'll be with you in a minute." She said warmly, even if her voice had a very noticeable tired undertone to it.
"Don't fret babe, I've got all day."
She lifted her head up, smiling. For some reason, she recognized the voice. Well, it was a pretty singular one.
Surely enough, she met face to face with the guy in the pink cap from the day before. He sat at the counter with a rather smug expression and started playing with a toothpick."Oh, hello again! Shake, yeah?" She asked, putting a few clean glasses back in place under the counter. Shake was taken back by her remembering his name, but still tried to play it cool.
"Am I already famous here or what?" He chuckled, the toothpick accidentally slipping out of his hand and landing on the ground. He cursed silently and leaned to pick it up. Cassie watched him with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. "I just heard your friend saying your name the other day when you guys came in to eat. They're not with you this time?" She asked.
Shake went back straight up, trying to keep himself together, though her smile made it particularly difficult.
"Them? Heh, I just came with them because they forced me last time..."He realized how bad this probably sounded and tried to spin it in some way.
"But I sure as hell found a good reason to come back!" He said leaning on the counter, giving a flirty look. Cassie couldn't repress a giggle.
"Smooth."She wasn't stupid. She knew he was just giving himself a fake style, and he wasn't very good at it either... But she found him quite charming, in a pathetic kind of way.
"So, can I get you anything?" She questioned kindly. He saw a perfect opportunity and winked at her, removing his hat and running a hand through his blonde hair.
"A coffee, and your number?" He asked casually. Cassie paused for a moment, and let out a small laugh, moving over to the coffee machine. Her lack of clear response made Shake uneasy, but it waw not a negative answer at the very least. After a few minutes of awkward silence, Cassie came back with a hot cup of coffee as well as a piece of apple pie. "Here. Pie's on the house." She smiled, sliding them to him.
"What gives?" He asked suspiciously, even though he was never one to refuse free stuff. The girl just shrugged and smiled as the diner was filling up with more people. She gave him a wink, slipping a napkin under his plate before walking off to take care of the new customers.Shake felt his heart skip a beat when he unfolded it and saw the ten digits scribbled on it.
