Chapter 3

When the doors opened my breath was taken away a huge chandelier even grander than before was above with the high ceiling thousands of floating candles were surrounding it. A soft violin was playing and I looked to see a young man in a suit playing. The floor was black and silver marble and pillars led up to the grand throne. The guard bowed and I curtsied awkwardly. I heard whispers and I noticed there were thrones beside the two in the center, about four marble thrones on each side with masked people.

“Approach human!” the loud voice boomed in the empty space. I heard the doors behind me close and I gulped walking forward down the aisle. When I reached the ending point, the guard who had escorted me walked up to the king and handed him the note whispering in his ear, something I could not hear. I heard the masked people speaking in a different tongue and I bit my lip nervously. The king nodded and the guard bowed to me then left. I was uneasy and I glanced at the king who was wearing a black cloak his eyes burned a bright gold and he had a crown of black gems. I looked beside him at the empty seat realizing the prince was not present made me happy since it was one less person to judge me.

“You are Lucia…the destined one.” The King looked at me his eyes were very intimidating and he scanned my body. “That dress suits you” as he said that I curtsied s if to say thank you. He then smiled. “For a human you have manners at least, last human was very arrogant he barged in like he owned the place. Thank you for showing some decency.”

“Your highness,” I asked slowly, he cocked a eyebrow at me and nodded for me to continue. “I am just a human, but may I ask can I go home…” my voice cracked, I fell to the ground and the king stood approaching me. The men who I assumed were ambassadors gasped in horror.

“My dear, you are more than you know. I understand you were supposed to die correct?” as he asked stopping in front of me. I was kneeling on the floor covering my head in fear my head bowed and fearful. “You have no reason to be afraid. I may be the king here but I am not a cruel as you may think.” I looked up and realized the King was kneeling, lifting my chin he smiled. I was in utter shock.

“Your highness, I don’t understand. I am human filth as I was called when I arrived…” I tried to phrase my words formally, I needed to get back home, thinking of Maya made my eyes water.  I had a sister and a brother a mother. But would they know I am gone? What if I died here?

“Yes you are human technically…” He stood and turned to his ambassadors. “Leave us, but bring he prince here!” he commanded them in such a way it made me flinch his voice was no longer kind. Also, I had something to fear.

Once everyone had left the King sat down at his throne and looked at me. “Stand my dear.” I obeyed willingly even though bruises and cuts on my ankles and legs made it hurt. I fixed my skirt. He continued, “You are not from this realm, you are just a human girl. Or so you think. Where did you get Chanil?” he asked this and I was confused. Then I remembered my Pendant.

“Since I was a child, my mother said my father gave it to me, before he left. Yet I don’t know who he is” I stood up properly in pain. It was hard to breathe. The King took note of the pain I tried to conceal on my face.

“You don’t need to be so proper. I know it is difficult for you. But I thank you for the effort” he spoke gently. I nodded and relaxed my muscles, sadly my back was bruised, and actually all of me was bruised and cut. “I also know you are injured which tells me you are motivated.” He noted. I sighed; I was an open book wasn’t I?

“Yes, I was going to a wedding and apparently I was supposed to die today. I need to get home” tears formed in my eyes once more. “Please I am begging.”
