I shook myself awake, how long had passed? It felt like months, years maybe. I looked to the left of me to see Alice alive and relatively healthy. I looked to the left of me to find my rifle still there, loaded and beautiful. I shook Alice awake and she turned over to me, bullet in chest, bloody mouth and empty, hungry eyes.
I scrambled back to the end of the tent, shitting myself and shaking as i tried to undo the zipper. I gave up trying to unzip it and ripped through the weak plastic. I stumbled out onto a horde of stinking rotting zombies. My heart flew to my mouth as i turned around and ran like fuck. My gear still stashed in the tent. I ran through the forest bumping into trees and tripping over roots. I ran for a solid 10 minutes until the forest gave up into open fields. Roads intertwining between them and no buildings or signs of people for miles around. I felt as hopeless as when i woke up on the sunday morning with my wife trying to eat me, not the kinky way either. I scanned the horizon again for anything i could find. After a while i sat down and tried to comprehend what just happened. Alice was a zombie, my gear was gone and i don't have a fucking clue where i am. I gathered my thoughts and tried to recall if i saw any buildings running here. An image popped into my mind of a blue, hospital looking, building. I decided to double back towards the general location. I found a seemingly random log cabin without anything inside of it, a shack nearby bolted shut. I decided to trek through the woods some more until i found civilisation.
I trekked for hours on end, starving and sweaty, i was thinking of giving up when i saw a building over the horizon through the trees. I decided not to enter directly for fear of attracting 'predators'. I stuck to the treeline, sneaking around until i had a clear shot towards the closest building. I decided to make a break for it and ran as fast as i dare go in my condition. I reached the the fence and ducked down as i saw a zombie in one of the adjacent gardens. I vaulted the fence, head down, and sneaked to the door, quietly opening it and closing it behind me.
i turned around and gingerly opened it a little to peek through, i saw nothing of interest in what looked like a basic kitchen. I fully opened the door and quickly threw myself in, looking round the corners. I saw a can of something on the table. I snatched it up and gave it a shake. It sounded liquid enough to be a drink so i put it in my pocket. I went through the other door into a bedroom. A can of something else was on the end table, i went over to it and shook that as well. It also sounded liqud but thicker, so i assumed beans or soup. I turned to the door, made my exit through the same way i entered and was careful not to disturb the zombie attacking pumpkins in the garden to my left. Gliding round the house towards the road, i froze when i saw another zombie on the road near a shed, i waited for her to lose interest in my 'oh shit' gasp. She slowly turned away from me and trudged over to something else chewable. I took this sliver of time to silently make my way to that shed and peek inside. "TOOFUCKINGLATE" popped into my mind as the road zombie turned around and decided it was a great idea to charge in my general direction, obviously seeing me and making my internal 'oh shit' factor skyrocket even more. I dived into the shed, slamming the door behind me. I tried to calm the banging and moaning by kicking the door, but that made it look even more like a 5 year old could make their way through. Looking around there was a kiwi, that i munched away at instantly, a shovel and a raincoat. Pulling the raincoat around me i picked up the shovel and prepared myself for a little gore. I looked like a massive twat, with my bright orange raincoat, camo jeans and a shovel. But i still put my hand on the door handle of the shed and raised the shovel above my head.
Opening the door i stepped back and let the woman zombie fall flat on her face and the other one, obviously attracted by a loud slam, trip over her. I put my other hand on the shovel and brought it down with a mighty thud, it split garden zombie's head like a watermelon, and i yanked it out of his brains to uppercut the other, who had made her way to her feet. She didn't seem phased by this and leaped forwards at me, only to be knocked back by my dwindling strength. It was almost like these things could sense you were tiring and got more violent. She scratched my raincoat and slashed the front open, but not catching my skin. I spun round to gain as much momentum as possible and swung the shovel at her smug face. It was erased of features and splattered across the shed wall. Keeling over to catch my breath i decided this place wasn't 100% safe. I looked around outside the shed to see if i could spend the night in any of these buildings. I saw a medium looking 2 storey house up on a hill. I jogged over to it. I opened the back door to find a red hoodie. I tore what remained of my raincoat off and put the hoodie on. I opened another door to find a bandana and a 'Wolf' mask. I remember it from my childhood. I put the bandana over my head and sat down in front of the mask, evaluating my shitty life. I let a single tear flow down my cheek. This symbol that defined my childhood, worn by psycopaths who murder innocent people and children for pleasure and the odd can of beans. It's meaning shattered like a skull being exposed to a bullet. I wiped the tear away, and grabbed the mask. I. I pulled the strap back and put it behind my head. I placed the mask over my face and looked up, like a crappy drama scene. I opened another door and explored some more. I eventually ran across a goldmine of food, bananas, cans and rice everywhere. I pulled my mask off and gorged on fruit for a couple minutes. It felt like the first time i had properly eaten in years. After eating and eating, i decided to find a place to sleep. The kitchen seemed good enough to me so i pulled my new mask off and placed it next to me. I unzipped my hoodie and put it down in a pile. I tucked myself away behind the table and lay my head on the hoodie.
"Sleeping like a king" i thought to myself, for the first time all day.
