Thomas paced, struggling to not turn back to his wolf form. His anxiety was awful, particularly in the middle of the week — probably a product of his stressful college schedule, but he had to endure it so he could pass for normal. He growled to himself, then continued his perpetual circling.

His wolfish urge told him to leap, to tear, to sink his teeth into anything he could. He needed something to ease the pain, and human remedies didn't work. No alcohol could suffice.

So he went to the only thing that could relieve his stress. He went to James.

Now James was a wizard that specialized in anxiety relieving potions, someone who used his talent for practical means that made him popular among the magical community. Thomas could trust him; in fact, he was the only being that Thomas had trusted in a long time, and James' friendship meant a lot to him. But recently, he's been feeling a more peculiar emotion. It was something he hadn't really experienced before. Call it...infatuation? Admiration?

Dare he fall in love with someone who saw him as a mere client?

He decided that he couldn't control any part of his emotion, and set off for the mountain home of James.

James was napping in his chair when Thomas came into the office, so Thomas knocked softly on the wall to wake him.

"Oh, hello Thomas! What can I do for you?"

"I'm sorry to wake you, but I need another potion to stabilize me. It's getting harder and I couldn't wait,"

"That's alright, Thomas, I always look forward to seeing you," he smiled and reached for his ingredients.

Thomas felt a strange lurch in his chest as he stepped closer to the man. "How are you, Jemmy?"

"I'm well, I suppose. You?"

"Fair,"

There was a moment of comfortable silence and Thomas felt the urge to leap forward, but not with the intention of attack. This was different. He wanted to hold James and kiss him and probably something else that he blushed at the thought of.

"James..."

James handed him a small bottle filled with purple liquid — the stabilizer meant to even his emotions. "Yes?"

"I need your help with something else,"

"Alright,"

"Could you... describe what Love feels like?"

James cocked his head oddly but closed his eyes anyway and began to think. "Love, depending on the circumstance, can feel so good that it hurts, or hurt so much that it's good. It's beautiful, like planting a garden in your soul and watching the stems turn into blossoms. But love can be red and messy and deep, too, like watching the ocean beneath you as you stand on thin glass. Love is everything and it is nothing, and it can kill you whether you have it or you don't,"

Thomas felt his jaw drop slightly in awe.

"Thomas, why do you want to know?"

"Do you ... do you have a love?"

"Are you asking if I have a girlfriend?"

"Yes," Thomas braved himself for the crushing words: I'm straight.

"I'm gay, but no, I don't have a boyfriend,"

"Can you be my boyfriend, then?"

"Why do you want a boyfriend, Tom?"

"I'm not sure," he rubbed the back of his neck. "I feel something that I can't describe, and I think this is what normal humans do when they feel this way,"

"I'll go out with you,"

Thomas lit up. "What do I do now?"

"We could kiss...?"

Thomas pressed forward and obliged, his smile pressing against James' as they stood in warm silence. This lasted a few seconds, then Thomas pulled back.

"Y'know, Jem, I don't think I need that potion,"

James blushed as Thomas slipped out of the room.
