Prologue

"Mommy?". A six year old Lilac Tanner ran up to her mother. "Mommy?", "mommy, are you Ok?". "Lial, are you here?" her mother's voice came out as a quiet rasp. "Daddy! Help!" Lilac called. "I'm here mommy" she whispered to her collapsed mother. Her mother had been diagnosed with severe cancer in her lung, liver and tongue last summer. Lilac and her father, Quan, knew her time was limited. Her father had quit his navy S.E.A.L job to spend these last weeks with her. Lilac tried to run and get help but her mom grabbed her with surprising strength. "Lial, i'm so sorry to do this to you. To survive you will need-". Her mother's voice faded In and out "and remember to beat the maze you must say- " "and go right 10 left 5 up 3 left 1-". "Mama, What are you saying, what maze?". Her mom suddenly started coughing up blood, her heart beat growing fainter and fainter. She pulled Lilacs ear to her mouth and whispered something in her ear that she couldn't hear. Three minutes later she died in Lilacs arms. Lilac cried and cried. Greif tore her soul in two. People came and pried her mother's body from her arms. She faintly remembered someone whispering to her. The voice was soothing and and sent her to sleep.

That night, she had a nightmare. It started in a maze. It barely lasted a minute, but it was enough to chill her to the bone. Little did she know, that same nightmare would haunt her for the rest of her life.

She was Falling, falling, falling, falling. The area around her was pitch black. She started to be able to see below her. She was falling into... a maze? Endless areas of twisting, turning maze lay below her. Not so below anymore. She expected to hit the ground in a few moments but it was more a few minutes. She hit the ground softly and immediately took in her surroundings. It was dark in, well, where was she? A maze? Walls towers 100 stories above her. The area around her was wide enough to fit a football field, and was also pitch black. Suddenly a loud groaning split the silence. Two glowing orange orbs pierced the dark a few yards front of her. She almost cried out for joy! She was saved! Then she saw the claws. Whatever the thing was, it had long silver sharp claws. The lamps? They were the creatures eyes. She couldn't see the rest of it. It was probably better that way. She hesitated, frozen by fear. It made the groaning sound she had heard earlier. That knocked the sense back into her. She ran... ran... ran... ran out of fear, out of heartbreak. She ran... ran... ran...

... ran into the dark
