Aleah's P.O.V.We're a few days away from the beginning of the new school year, marking the end of summer. Today is the Portman's annual 'Last Summer BBQ'. I'm just happy I get to see my best friend, Jeremiah, one last time before the chaos of annoying classmates.
"Aleah, hurry!" I hear Mom yell from the living room.
"I know! I know." I reply, pulling my dark, dark brown hair into a low ponytail. I step back a little from the mirror, taking it all in. I'm wearing a plain white v-neck tee, paired with jean shorts and my worn out pink chuck taylors. I smile at my reflection.
I pull one of my drawers open, in search of my strawberry Lip Smacker. Where is it?! I hiss lowly to myself while searching my drawer. I can't seem to find it.
"Aleah! Honey, it's been 5 minutes! We're going to be late if you don't hurry."
"Alright." I sigh, discontent. I push the drawer closed and go join my impatient parents and a annoyed Lani in the living room.

Around 20 minutes later, we arrive at Jeremy's. The Portman's live in a decently nice area. Big, nice, identical-to-each-other type of houses. I love coming over. They have a pool and it's all so pretty. All so different to what I'm used to.
My mom rings the doorbell while my dad holds the gift they got Jeremy's parents. I don't know why, we usually never gift anyone anything. Weird.
My brain stops working for a second once I see Jeremiah standing at the door, in his v-neck and cargo shorts glory. Out of instinct, my back straightens up and I smooth out my shirt.
Smile, I tell myself, you're cuter when you smile.
He greets my parents and let's them in.
"Lani!" I hear Tatiana, Jeremy's older sister, call out to my sister. Lani shoves me and Jeremy, running to Tatiana's room. I watch her, rolling my eyes.
"Hey, queen stiff-back." I hear him say. I turn my head in his direction, rolling my eyes again but smiling.
"Hey, king stupid." I retort.
"Ha-ha. Nice one, Medora."
"Why thank you, Portman."
He shakes his head and gestures me to come inside. I nod thanks and bee-line straight to the snacks table, where there's all types of sweets like M&M's, Skittles, Bubblegum balls, sour candies and a chocolate fountain with jumbo marshmallows on cake pop sticks near it. I reach for a marshmallow and dip the whole thing in chocolate, taking a big bite. Sooo goood. I hear Jeremy's chuckle behind me.
I look up at him, a muffled 'What?' leaving my marshmallow filled mouth. He smiles fondly down at me and I frown because he's always been slightly taller than me. "What?" I say clearer now that the chunk of candy has been swallowed.
His hand comes up to the side of my mouth, wiping what I'm guessing is chocolate. "You had chocolate on your face." He states simply.
I feel my cheeks heat up. "Oh." I lamely respond, taking another bite out of my marshmallow.
"Jeremiah!" We both look in the direction of the voice. His mom. She narrows her eyes at me and I turn around, starting my way inside. The lady does not like me. Jeremy grunts and mouths 'Sorry' to me.
'It's fine' I mouth back, even if I don't mean it. With Jeremiah gone, my only options left are Tatiana and Lani. Just great. I knock softly on Tatiana's lavender bedroom door. I hear giggles and pop music being played, making me instantly regret knocking her grouchiness's door. Too late now, I think miserably, as the door knob is turning.
