Aleah's P.O.V.
~~"I can take them, if that's all right?" My mom offers to Mrs. Portman.
Just great.
After an awkward breakfast why don't we just throw in an awkward car ride to school too! And I just bet Tatiana doesn't want to enter school with me so that's going to be a problem.
"Is that good with you girls?" Mrs. Portman asks Lani and I.
My face goes blank for a quick second before I smile. "Of course it is. I can even show them where their classes are." I say, cautiously taking a glance at Jeremiah and Tatiana. Jeremiah nods and Tatiana yawns.
Mrs. Portman gives her the most ashamed stare, almost quite like the ones she would give me years ago. "Yes, that's so sweet of you Aleah, thank you."
I smile tensely and start making my way out of the restaurant and to the car. I hear footsteps right behind me so I turn around and see Jeremiah.
I slow down my pace so he can catch up. I look at him for a while, wondering why on Earth he's walking beside me.
I shake it off and turn to look forward again. He puts his hands in his pockets and exhales. I don't say anything and he doesn't either.
We're walking in a comfortable silence all the way to the car, and I really like this, I really truly am treasuring it before it ends.
Which is right about now when my sister breaks the silence by laughing obnoxiously loud at one of my mom's sarcastic comments.
I'm sure it was witty and I'm sure it was funny but she just ruined the moment I was having with Jeremiah. Probably the only moment I'll have with him in a long while.
You take what you can get though, right?
As we all settled into my mom's car, small chat between Lani and Tatiana filled the car.
Wow, so they're talking but Jeremiah and I are back at square one terms? Lovely.
Buzz! My phone vibrated in my pocket. I didn't check it and it buzzed again. I ignored it and straightened my back.
I'm on edge. Why? I don't know, don't ask me.
I flick my bangs out of my face and place my hands neatly on my knees. Breathe.
I hear Jeremiah cough beside me. "Stiff-back." He whispers and then laughs.
My mouth gapes open and I turn to look at him, disbelief written all over my face. I let out what sounded like a mix of a gasp and a laugh. "Well!" I say feigning aggravation.
Jeremiah let's out a little laugh himself and turns to look back up front. He shakes his head a little while bitting his lip, trying to hide a smile.
~~~~~
Jeremiah's P.O.V.
I bite my lip to try and keep the wide smile I feel forming from showing.
I knew it.
I just knew deep inside me, that Aleah still has it. She still has that awesomeness and humor buried deep, deep inside her. It's under the dumb facade she's putting up.
She's still got it. My best friend is still somewhere in there.
And knowing that makes me so damn happy.
