I wake up groggily. I attempt to move but my hands and feet are chained to, what looks like an old wooden chair. I look around the room as my eyes adjust to the darkness surrounding me. I see nothing, absolutely nothing. The room is bare. Stripped down from it's former glory and any character it had. The walls are a bare pale color though it's too dark to know for sure. The floor is plain wood. The curtains are a dark black as they block out any light that could possibly reach me. There's nothing in the room but me. Me, and this god-awful chair that's bolted the floor. I lower my head as I try to recall earlier memories.
22 hours earlier
As I lay in an awkward position hunched over on the couch my dad bounces down the steps with his luggage. He checks the watch on his left wrist and sighs.
"Okay Charlotte, I'm just going out of town for a few days." Dad says as he searched for his keys. "Just remember to be safe. Don't let anyone you don't know inside, don't do anything stupid, and don't -"
"Try to call you, I know I know. I'll be safe, as always." I finished with a smile.
"I know you will be Char. I just worry is all. Okay well I have to get going, I love you sweetie." He says as he kisses my head gently. "I'll see you soon." He says as he tussles my dark brown wavy hair.
"I love you more." I reply. He gives me a smile, grabs his bags, and rushes out the door.
I walk around aimlessly deciding what I should do. I pick up my phone and dial Aries number.
She picks up on the third ring.
"Hey babe!" She shouts.
"Arie, please please please please please-"
"Come over?" She finishes.
"Please?" I beg.
She laughs on the other end.
"Yeah, I'll be over in ten."
"Okay! See you soon, love you!" I reply.
"Love you too hunbun." With that we hang up. I walk towards the kitchen and grab all sorts of chips and soda. I go to my room and grab tons of blankets and pillows and rush downstairs to set it all up.
By the time I'm done setting up all the food and blankets, Arie's standing in my doorway.
"AND THE FUN BEGINS!" She screams. She drops her bags on the couch and runs to hug me.
We jump on the couch and just start laughing.
"Thanks for coming." I smiled.
"Anytime darlin'. Hey, I've got a serious question for you." She says.
"Shoot."
"Why does your dad always take off on these trips? We've been friends for so many years and I'm still so confused on this subject."
"I've told you Arie. It's just his job." I say as I bite into some chips.
"Yeah, but I mean... like, what does he do?"
"Well, I don't know honestly. All I know is that every now and again he has to leave for these, "missions" as he calls them. He's usually gone for a couple days, and I'm not allowed to contact him during the time he's gone."
Arie sits quiet for a little while just munching on chips. She looks at me and frowns.
"Look, I know it's not normal for regular people, but it's normal for us. I'm glad you're here to keep me company though. I always wanted a body guard." We laugh and she hugs me.
"I love you so much Char." She says.
"I love you too."
The rest of the night we eat, watch movies, and talk. Mostly about the guy she likes who is apparently 'So hot you can't come within ten feet without getting third degree burns.' Her words not mine.
Arie falls asleep around midnight, but I stay up for awhile longer. I walk around the house I've been in all my life. It's 12:35 a.m. and here I am standing in my parents room. Well, now dad's room. Lately everything seems so foreign in here. Dad's been taking more trips than usual. The past two months I've maybe seen him a week total. When he's home he's not like he used to be. He stays in his room most of the time, and I feel like he's drifting apart from me. I walk back downstairs and let my thoughts overcome me as I fall asleep.
The next day
"WAKE UP YOU PILE OF SHIT." I open my eyes and see Arie, hunched over my face, her light brown hair falling onto me. She smiles. "Please?"
I push her off of me and laugh.
"I have to go hunny. I wish I could stay longer but I'm heading off to Orlando for that vacation with Mom." She smiles sadly. She grabs her bag off the sofa and starts picking all her things off of the floor.
"That was this week?" I ask.
"Well, it was originally next week but Mom met some army guy who wanted to go this week so I guess we're going this week." She shrugs and gives me a warm hug.
"I'll see you soon okay?" She smiles.
"Okay." I smile back.
As Arie leaves I start picking up the blankets and trash. I fix the purple and blue stripped lamp by the doorway that was, for some reason, laying on it's side. I notice the door is slightly open but think nothing of it as I head to the kitchen.
Suddenly hands are covering my eyes and mouth. The air becomes thick and I try to bite into the flesh covering my mouth but I lie motionless. I flail around trying to make any movement but my arms and legs go limp. I attempt to scream but they're muffled by, what now is some kind of fabric. I bite into it as hard as possible. I hear the words 'God Dammit!" Right before I take a deep breath and black out.
