Fully dressed and wrapped tightly in the heavy blanket by the fire, Meka sat against Jalyn's side and watched as everyone passed out presents. There were smiles on everyone's face, even Amelia's as Sarah and Amber handed her a present. Of course, Meka didn't have any to give out, but she got one from Robin and Marcus. Jalyn had been talking to them about the bonfire, and somehow her name got mentioned in the mix of it, or at least that's how Jalyn put it. Jewelry from Marcus – a couple of rings ($100 each according to the price tag) and a heart shaped locket (gold, not silver with intricate markings all over it). She thanked him, and he pulled her up for a tight hug. It had surprised her, and he shook her around like it was nothing – he was a big guy. Meka was lifted on her feet with a chorus of laughs around her backing up her own. Eventually she had hugged him back when he set her down; after her head stopped swimming from being shook around like a ragdoll.Robin had gotten her a scrapbook. It was about as thick as an older dictionary, and weighed about fifteen pounds without the pictures in it. When Meka laughed and asked how she was going to fill all of those pages up, Robin told her to wait.
Wait for what?
And why?
That was when Jalyn gave her his present. It was a large, bulky black camera that looked like it belonged to a photographer. A Nikon SLR Digital with an extra lens and case and 8SD card. It was a comfortable weight in her hands, much less than the scrapbook itself, and she lifted it up to her eye to get a feel of it. There was a bright red bow on it, and Meka peeled it off gently and stuck to her head. The price tag was noticeably missing, and Meka didn't ask how much it cost. Probably a lot, for a camera like this, even with a Christmas sale. Meka couldn't believe that Jalyn would do that for her, and she hugged him tightly with a large smile on his face.
Meka was waiting for Amelia to say something snarky about the present like, "It's a Christmas gift, not a freaking wedding engagement." Yeah, Meka could so see Amelia saying that. But her side of the fire was quiet, and she thought that Amelia was too caught up in the matching necklace that her and Sarah have together, and the teddy bear from Sarah. Marcus gave her some of his chocolate from Steve – apparently he's a chocoholic – and she thanked him kindly. There were no more arguments that night.
This was how Meka wanted it to be. The pack was never this calm; there was always something that was going on: two pack mates went aggressive and tore each other apart, someone was being mated, someone had died (bless their souls), someone was born (welcome), there was a war between two other packs and they needed a mediator (babysitter), etc. Nothing was ever as settle as it was now. And Meka wasn't sure which one she was more comfortable with; the blanket of silent bodies all around her, or the nest of busy bodies that she was accustomed to.
Sorry.
