A Battle For Change

Equinox

Sparks emerged from Rae's hands.

"What do you mean you refuse to step down. Its's an arrangement. You can't back down sis." She growled angrily, having always been the more hot-tempered one. Eira calmly sat back on the throne and ran a hand along the arm-rest.

"Well, I break the arrangement. I don't want to share. I'm sick and tired of it." She spoke in a soft but clear voice. The only sign that she was getting agitated was the snowflakes that had begun to climb up her white locks of hair. Rae on the other hand was breathing heavily with flames licking at every part of her body. Despite being twins, their behaviour had always been completely different. Yet, each was equally capable of being a good ruler and hence the arrangement had been made.

"If you refuse to get down this very instant then I challenge you to a duel. A final battle between the two of us. If Mum and Dad can't settle on one between us, we'll take care of it ourselves." She spoke with fury which had consumed her sense of right and wrong. She soon realised her mistake but the words had already been uttered. Before she could correct her mistake, Eira rose from the throne.

"I accept you challenge." She walked down the stairs and left the courtroom.

Eira and Rae were standing at opposite ends of the battle arena. The announcer explained the rules before blowing the trumpet for the duel to begin. As soon as the sound struck her ears, Rae charged out with a whirlpool of fire towards Eira. Eira merely waved her hand and a freezing gust of wind cooled down the fire. She then sent a shower of ice shards on Rae but the latter made a shield of heat before the shards could touch her and they were instantly melted. 

Rae sent heat wave after heat wave but Eira managed to cool them down before they could even come close to affecting her. Eira produced fierce hurricanes but Rae managed to precipitate them before they could freeze her. The battle went back and forth for quite some time with no distinct winner. Signs of fatigue could be seen on both the competitors but neither of them was ready to give up. Nimble on their footsteps and their movements so rapid that the audience was left spellbound.

The game of to and fro came to an end when both attacked at the same time. Rae sent a huge fire bolt towards Eira just as she projected a ice blizzard above Rae's head. Both were too late to react. Eira cooled the fire attack too late and her hand had already been heated up. Rae on the other hand had recovered at the last minute but was completely drenched now. They both fell down from exhaustion. They looked at each other and laughed.

"You can take the throne" Eira called out before they both collapsed on the floor.
