"You get anything yet?" FP asked.
"No. Not yet."
"Kid you're doing me a great favor and a great job. But you gotta keep me-"
"I know, its just-"
"Just what?" FP snapped. "What, you actually like the Keller boy?"
Joaquin remained silent. He averted his eyes down to the floor and played with a strand of fabric from his shirt.
FP put out his cigarette and laughed.
"Ah, you're breaking' my heart Joaquin. You really are."
"It's just that,"Joaquin hesitated. "he actually likes me."
"And?"
"I don't know. I think... maybe... I- I do too"
FP stared at Joaquin and took a drink of beer that was laying open on the counter.
"You're sixteen?" he asked.
"Yeah"
"It's just the hormones. Once you stop kissing him, you'll get over it."
Joaquin stayed silent and scratched at the Serpent tattoo on his arm.
"Remember," FP added. "He's the Sheriff's son. You're a serpent. It ain't ever gonna work. Beer?"
"Not now."
Joaquin stood up and made his way towards the door.
"Hey, where you going? We still need to talk." FP came over and blocked the doorway. "We got a job to do, remember?"
Joaquin looked up at him and stepped out of FP's way. He reached for the handle but was roughly pushed away back towards the room.
"Look man," Joaquin started. "I don't- I don't think I wanna do this anymore. What if someone finds out?"
FP sucked on his teeth and leaned against the wall.
"So what are gonna do? Ditch me right here? You expect me to do all this work by myself?"
"You can ask some other Serpent." A slow fear crept over Joaquin as he saw the anger in FP's eyes.
"You actually expect me to let you go with all the stuff you know? So you can go tell your pretty little boyfriend everything?!" FP moved towards Joaquin and slammed his fist down on the counter. The forks and the plates rattled and a shot glass fell over leaking its content onto the floor.
"No," Joaquin whispered.
"I thought so. Now sit back down cause we have stuff to discuss"
Joaquin moved back to the couch and took a seat. He glanced at FP who was searching the pantry fiercely for some whiskey.
"Can I get that beer now?" Joaquin asked.
"If you have any sense, you should shut you self up and listen."
"Sorry," he said quietly.
FP stood up with a glass bottle in his hand.
"If I ever," he said, threateningly. "Ever hear you mentioning any of this to someone, Riverdale might have another murder case on their hand. I don't think your boyfriend would like that, would he?"
"No. No he wouldn't."
“Why do you even like him anyways?” FP asked. He took a swig from the bottle and leaned on the sink. The kid twirled a plastic knife in his hand and shrugged, not looking up from the floor.
“He’s nice,” he said. “He’s funny, and he actually cares about me. Probably the only one that does.” Joaquin ran his finger over the serrated part of the knife and shook his leg. “I don’t know. I just do.”
FP said nothing. He knew that once this was all over, either him or Joaquin would have to leave this town. He could tell that the whole situation was terrifying the kid, no matter how much he tired to hide it.
“You know why I chose you to do all this for me?” FP asked.
Joaquin shook him head.
“Cause your smart. You know how to stay out of trouble. Keep it low. The rest of them?” FP said. “They don't got no sense. But mostly, cause you’re the only one who can melt in. And as long as you keep it up, we’re gonna be fine.” He lit a cigarette and took a draught.
“What do you mean, ‘we’re gonna be fine’?” Joaquin asked disbelievingly. “We just cleaned up a dead body FP. A dead Blossom body. I’m gonna have to tell him one way or another. Otherwise it’s gonna get more complicated.”
“You think he’s still gonna like you after that? After he finds out that the guy he’s been kissing is a murder suspect? A criminal? He’s the sheriff’s kid.” A cloud of smoke came billowing out of his mouth. “He can turn you in whenever he want. Just because you have whatever the hell you have with him, it doesn't mean you're off the hook."
