As the thirty-two students hiked after Jake Mitchell, Oliver had kept replaying the ghost's terrifying message inside his head.
"We need to talk," the ghost girl hissed. "Bring your vampire girlfriend with you."
First off, how does she know that Amelia is a vampire? Is it the fact that she is wearing a hoodie in broad daylight? Was Amelia eyeing a kid funny?
Not that Amelia would do it, of course.
Now, what exactly does she want? he thinks. Based on the girl's cold expression, he knows it's something bad.
If it had to do with the Fire of '87, then Oliver would be more than happy to help the spirit, giving her closure and support.
And as much as he wants to ditch his hateful classmates, Oliver knows that he had just arrived in Camp Esterville. Leaving now will make him a laughingstock.
Over on his left side was Amelia, distancing herself from the others.
But as she walks, Amelia held her head up high and moves in a graceful manner; dark blond curls bounced behind her, her pale hands were buried deep inside Oliver's hoodie pockets, and her dark eyes stared ahead at the trail, ignoring the scent of human blood passing her nose.
"Hey, Amelia," he says in a whisper.
The vampire turns her eyes from the trail and looked at Oliver.
"Yes?" she asked politely.
"How long have we been walking?"
The vampire shrugged her skinny shoulders.
"I don't know, probably five hours."
"Ugh," Oliver moaned. "Five hours?! Isn't there a shortcut or something?"
"I don't think there is," said Amelia. "Even if there was a shortcut, I-"
"Hey, newcomer!" Jake Mitchell greeted.
The stunning blond looks up to see the former football player grinning at her.
His muscles were relaxed, his eyes were cheerful, and his face awed by Amelia's beauty.
"Hello," Amelia answered unsurely.
"My name is Jake, you must be the chaperone?"
The vampire glanced at Oliver, who nodded eagerly, hoping that it would drop suspicion.
"Yes," she says delightfully. "I am a chaperone."
Jake's dark eyes brightened. "Really?"
When Amelia nodded, Jake said, "It's rare that Esterville High students bring their own chaperones. Are you a parent?"
Amelia smiled grimly.
"You can say that," she said.
Jake looks at her funny. "What do you mean by that?"
Amelia smiled, "That's for me and Oliver to know, and for you to find out."
Jake laughed. "Mysterious, aren't you, Miss-"
"Parker. Amelia Parker." introduced the vampire.
"Nice to meet you, my name is Jake Mitchell."
The vampire gives him a flirtatious wink, then joins over to her friend, who looks at her in disgust.
"What?" Amelia cried.
"Please tell me that you're not thinking about sleeping with him." Oliver groaned.
