Kevin drummed his fingers on the steering wheel nervously. Every few seconds, he would glance at the furious girl sitting next to him with her arm crossed and a murderous glare fixed on her face.
The fifth time he did that she directed her glare at him. "Are you going to say something or are you going to spend the whole time staring at me and waiting for me to explode?"
"yes ma'am... I-I mean no ma'am I'm gonna start talking and I am not going to hold direct eye contact with you and/or say anything about how scary your boyfriend is."
"He's not my boyfriend!" She yelled.
"Okay, okay. Easy there. Sorry. I meant ex boyfriend. Happy?"
She huffed then mumbled. "And he's not scary he's just a jerk."
"Excuse me? Have you seen the way he looked at me. I'm pretty sure if he had a gun in his hand at that moment he wouldn't have hesitated to shoot me."
"Don't be ridiculous. And plus, he can't shoot to save his life."
"What?" He exclaimed in pure terror.
"He can't aim." She muttered, as her eyes got lost in the distance. Suddenly, Kevin slammed the breaks and turned to her. "Woah- hey! Why did you stop?"
"Lilly, sweetheart, is there something you're not telling me?"
"What?" She asked, confused.
"How would you know if he can shoot? What exactly did you do for your dates? Go on killing sprees?" He yelled.
"Kev," she called amused but he didn't stop.
"and here i thought my sweet innocent little Lil is so..."
"Kevin."
" Well sweet and innocent."
"Listen,"
" And now it turns out you're from the mafia."
"KEVIN!"
"What?"
"I know he can't aim because he took me once to play paintball. That's all."
He stayed silent for a while before he finally breathed. "Oh."
"By the end of the game, I had him covered from head to toe with pink and purple paint. " She smiled at the memory. " He had barely hit me once. And even that was when he literally tripped over his own feet and dropped the gun." She laughed. " All of the week after that he had pink and purple streaks in his hair and no matter how much he washed it it won't get off."
Kevin stared at her in awe. Her smile was so genuine, so unguarded that it mad him wonder if he had ever seen her real smile before that moment.
"What?" She asked when she saw him staring.
"Nothing." He coughed as he averted his eyes.
"Now can we please go? I'm positively starving, and somebody promised me some sushi."
"Yeah, right, of course." he cleared his throat and stepped on the gas.
The rest of the ride was spent silent as Lilly drowned in one single memory that seemed like a lifetime ago.
She stared into the distance, humming to herself until she realized what she was doing and stopped. She frowned, angry at her own mind for the events it had played and replayed. She knew this wasn't right. What happened to her hurt too much to be forgiven. And God knows it was impossible to forget.
So why is there apart of her that is actually... happy?... to welcome Declan back into her life.
No. This wasn't possible. He's back for barely a day and he's already reopened too many wounds. His behavior towards Kevin didn't help his case either.
