Step.
Pause.
Step.
Pause.
Rowena's pace down the side of the highway was slow, due to all the cars passing by. It was really late at night, and she wasn't expecting all of these cars to be out. I guess more people were out bar-hopping than she thought.
The little terrier dog she'd met was in her arms, sleeping. She looked down at it and smiled.
She looked ahead. A store. After what felt like forever, she'd finally found "civilization", and a possible way to contact her family. Her phone had been dead and without service for the past few days.
She raced towards the store ahead of her. Thankfully it was open 24/7, otherwise there'd be no way for her to even think about contacting her parents. Or, at least someone.
She opened the doors. Her dog-friend was still in her arms. The manager of the store wouldn't fight the fact that it was there. It was late, and Rowena definitely looked like she really needed help.
The store manager looked at her, and questioned her as to why she was here so late. Rowena answered him with her story.
The manager nodded, showing her to the store's only phone, in the back room; usually, it was only for employee use. But for Rowena, he made an exception.
Rowena stepped forward to it and the floor creaked.
Ring, ring...
The phone was ringing on the other end.
No answer.
