The air in the winter was cold in the month of January.

The month of January was the worst month of all, on the day of the 10th, the worst day of the year.

Was where all of it should have ended.

(January 10th 9:45 Pm, Elgin Illinois )

The room was warm and the bed was crinkly.  Blue plain scrubs hung from my body as I filled out the food menu and my parents left me alone.  The Hospital socks shuffling across the tile floor. The almost empty room with the exception of 2 beds and a huge sealed tight window. A girl slept on the bed only 6 feet apart from mine. The room was plain and dark with only the dark window showing moonlight. I was scared, we were scared.

The shallow breathing filled the room, no clocks, no time, no sense. I curled up in a ball as the girl shuffled in her bed. I was scared, with the bright light of the hallway with the huge door open, it was hard to fall asleep. I turned to see her, she had on a purple sweater and her hair was in a messy bun.

Before I knew it I started to sob quietly, what had I done? I had done something bad, something unforgivable and where had to that lead me? Here in this place locked up in a facility, where you were not permitted to leave until they saw fit for your condition. But I had cried before I arrived here, at school, in my house, in the car, and finally in the emergency room.

The tears stayed in my eye and I stayed up until the sky became a little lighter. A nurse came in to take my blood pressure and temperature and same for the other girl. I finally slept for what seemed like 3 hours and was awoken by a knock.

(January 11, 7:34 AM)

"Breakfast is ready."Said the Nurse.

"ok," I said.

I groan as I got out the white blanket and went to the small and mental bathroom. I used did my business and flushed the loud toilet before washing my hands. Then I was meet with the girl in the purple sweater and I noticed for the first time, that her unkempt appearance of brown locks and pale skin and now a long ponytail. We stared at each other for a good 20 seconds before I spoke up.

"H-hello?"I said timidly.

"Hi," she said while grinning.

"your name?" I asked.

"Amber, yours?"She asked.

"Jade"

"well Jade it's time for breakfast, come on," she said.

We walked into the corridor, past the bolted on pictures on the wall and the low ceiling and to the day room. In the room that I never saw the day before was labeled the day room. Walking inside I saw 5 tables some green and another whitish color with multiple chairs and  4 other people sitting down. I took notice in the room. The positive messages on the walls and the TV hanging on the wall playing Friends. The huge ass window that lite up the room and the cart filled with food trays. I walked to the tray that had my name on it and took it and ran to a chair across a boy that looked older than me. Amber eyes scanning me and me doing the same it was silent except for the chatter of the Social worker intern named Jared.

Careful not to make any noise I opened up the lid covering up my food and saw a bagel and bacon and an orange slice rest on the plate. Orange juice and yogurt with a dessert on the side. Watching the episode of friends with the quiet murmur of the heater. This is where I was, St. Peters hospital behavioral.

As I finished my food and put it back in the cart. I was time to fill in our menu's for the next day. With that, we had to go the floors nurse station and grab our hygiene boxes. Going back to my room. Reading a sign on the wall flashing me back to before I reached the 6th floor.

(flashback)

"Welcome to our hospital, On our floor, we only take 6 adults and 6 adolescents for the mental health program. None of our patients stay for more than 2 weeks," said Venezuela.

"A person with depression we can help here," She said reassuringly.

"So your saying I might have depression," I said worriedly.

"That might be one of the things," she said.

That is when I broke down in sobs the second time that day on a plain hospital bed for the second time blinded on what was coming next after the emergency room.
