Claudia made it just in time for attendance. "Claudia Jaramillo?" The teacher read off her clipboard.
Claudia came through the door out of breath and everyone looked at her as if she had just killed someone instead of just being late.
"Alive!" Claudia waved at her new teacher and caught her breath.
"Lucky you, Ms. Jaramillo. Another second late and I would of marked you absent." The teacher signaled her to a desk to settle down in. Claudia made her way to the desk and let out a big sigh of relief.
"Now class, my name is Mrs. Peterson. I'm thrilled to spend a perfectly great year with you than be retired."
The class started laughing and Mrs. Peterson quickly snapped, "It wasn't a joke!"
Everyone became silent.
"Now for you to survive-excuse me, I meant pass my class you will need to be on time-" Mrs. Peterson glanced at Claudia's direction.
"Oh, great! Just the reputation I needed to make!" Claudia thought.
"-with your homework completed, with all your materials, and with a focused mind! That means that once you enter my classroom forget what you learned in your other classes because that isn't going to help you here! So pay att-"
"What about reading?! Should we forget about reading?!" A class clown interrupted. He succeeded at making everyone laugh.
"Mr. -" Mrs. Peterson looked at her seating chart.
"Mr. Chase you should have enough common sense to know my figurative speech! Now as I was saying, pay attention and any questions that you prefer to ask privately are for the end of class. Now that I've explained my expectations for you this year I'll explain what I'll be blithe to help you with.." Mrs. Peterson walked around the classroom making eye contact with everyone as she lectured them.
"...I take my job very seriously, therefore I want my students to succeed not just in this class, but in life..." Mrs. Peterson continued.

"Well, she sounds delightful! Glad I didn't get her!" Charlotte said as she stretched her legs.
"Yeah, well my goal was to have A's this year, but now I'll be more than happy just passing!" Claudia replied as she cracked her back and tried to reach for the floor.
"Yeah, well at least we have P.E. together!" Charlotte said on a happy note.
"Yeah, I guess but-"
"Too much talking not enough sweating!" Mr. Johnson interrupted and then blew his whistle. "SWITCH!" He blared. Claudia rubbed her ear with her index finger, Mr. Johnson was standing next to her when he blew his whistle.
Claudia jogged around the track that went around the school's football field with her best friend Charlotte.
"Jaramillo! Ethridge! TOO SLOW! GET BACK!" Mr. Johnson bellowed.
"Ugh!" Charlotte whined.
"Stupid High School!" Claudia mumbled.
---
"I swear he tried to kill us!" Claudia said wheezing and sweating as she sat down at the lunch table and drank half of her water bottle in one drink.
"Did you know he was a former marine?! Who hires a former marine?! Don't they know the boot camp he put us through?!" Claudia complained.
"This is going to be a loooong year!" Charlotte added.
Claudia's phone started ringing.
"♬WHY WON'T YOU ANSWER ME?! HELLO?! IT'S YOUR CELL PHONE! YOU THINK YOU'RE JUST NOT GONNA ANSWER ME, YOU KEEP ME IN YOUR POCKET LIKE I'M SOME...♬"
