He glared down at the world from the clouds overlooking everything , looking for someone who had a life he could fix. He was sure he would win the big prize this year for helping the most people. Billy Joe Bob didn't do this because it was his job, or just from the goodness of his heart. He was competing for helping the most people in one year. There was a huge reward to be had. It was a tie at the moment between he and his rival, Bob Billy Joe. In just one year they had both helped over 200 people, and were determined to help more people than the other.
Their job was to help the lives of people who couldn't function on their own in the real world. What made this hard was the fact that Billy Joe Bob was dead. He was dead as could be, basically a ghost. It was hard to get people to believe he was really there, and that he was going to help them. To get to the paradise every dead person wanted, they had to help the most people. No one knew what or where this paradise was, but everyone wanted to go there.
The downside of the job was, only the person who they were helping could see them, meaning they would sometimes seem like a lunatic to others. Billy thought this made it all more fun. He had to try and help these people function in society and not make them look crazy at the same time. Billy and his co-workers usually look for the ones with disabilities or veterans who returned from war. Now don't think about this all wrong, this first started as a good thing, until the others started getting competitive about it. That's how the yearly competition started, with everyone thinking they could help the most people as fast as possible.
Finally he noticed someone, a girl in New York City. She had green eyes and brown hair, and compared to the other girls and even some guys around, she was taller and stronger. She seemed to be a sort of outcast to the others though, when they looked at her it was pure disgust. She would shoot them the same look right back and then turn away and look hurt. Billy Joe watched as two guys and one girl walked up to her and started pushing her around a bit. She was very angry now, she chased them off grabbing one of the guys and giving him a good beating. The others ran off while the guy was trying to get away and live at the same time.
Billy suddenly didn't want to help this girl, she was too crazy and someone else should help her. But as he looked around he couldn't see anyone else, like literally the world was empty except for this one girl.
"Maybe they're just all inside," he mumbled to himself. He looked some more, even considered going down and looking. He asked his friend Mike next to him, "Hey, am I insane or are there actually no people down there?" Mike just looked at Billy Joe like he was an idiot, "Uh, yeah you're insane, people are walking around everywhere."
Billy looked again, and still did not see anyone else, only the one girl.
No, he thought to himself, I will not help this girl, she can't even attempt to control herself. Still, only the girl was there.
After looking some more, Billy finally decided to go and have a chat with her. Maybe she isn't as bad as I think. Well he was wrong, as soon as he flew down she noticed him.
"Well look at that," she said. "Guess you guys think I needed help huh?" Billy Joe was dumbfounded, how could this girl not be surprised by him, and also act like he was normal.
"Why are you acting like you've seen me before?"
the girl looked at him like he was stupid. "You and your ghost friends think no one sees you, but we really do. But look, I don't need help so maybe just leave me alone," she started walking away and Billy flew to catch up with her.
"Wait how can you guys see us? We always thought that we could only show ourselves to the people we're helping," he said. She didn't answer him or even look at him. She just kept walking confidently along the sidewalk, some people would walk or drive by yelling at her, "Ghosty!"
