Conversation over
I walk outside, letting my eyes adjust to the bright sunlight. Lucas is by his door with his back to me. I take this as an opportunity to jump up on his back. Payback for him wrestling me to the ground yesterday.
"arghhh!" He flails his arms around, trying to get me off, but I grip tightly onto the collar of his tee-shirt.
"okay. Fine. The bowling alley is only a block away. It's a good thing we live in such a small Arizona town. We can walk everywhere."
He's giving in? Just like that? What has Australia done to him? Normally he would fight me until we both ended up on the prickly grass. Oh well, at least this way I don't have to walk. Walking gets tiring. I rest my head on his shoulder as he starts walking to the bowling alley.
It's about a block away, and the opposite direction from our school. I would say you could imagine our town as a giant capital I.
At the top middle is where Lucas and I live. To the right is the school and Alison's house. To the left is the bowling alley. Down is the movie theater. To the left of the movie theater is the shopping strip mall. And to the right of the theater is the grocery store. And then everywhere else is basically crap stores and other peoples homes. But all the important places are located on the I.
"so, Lucas, how has your day been so far?"
"I guess it's been okay. It would be better if you would get off my back and walk yourself."
"oh, but where's the fun in that?"
I slipped of his back and he leaned over, Stretching his back. He just needed some gray hair and a cane to pull off the entire old man look perfectly.
"oh come on, we are almost there."
I grabbed his hand and pulled him the rest of the way to the bowling alley.
"one game, size 8, and a size 10 for him."
"coming right up," the guy behind the counter said. "there you go."
He had pulled out two, smelly, hideous pairs of shoes. I loved them! I quickly pulled off my shoes and slipped these on.
"you are in lane 3," he said while pointing across the room to a lane about 10 feet away from a group of kids. They looked to be about 11 years old. They were so small!
Whatever. Let's show these kids who the champion is!
"come on!"
"one second Em, I'm still putting my shoes on."
"then what color ball do you want? I'll grab it for you."
"uhm, I don't care, just as long as its not a super girly color." his face looked repulsed by the thought.
I picked up two balls from the rack and walked over to our lane.
"please tell me that the pink one is yours and that mine is the blue," Lucas said as he laid his eyes on the two bowling balls in my hands.
I pouted my lip, "come on, you know blue is my favorite color!" I set the pink one is his arms.
He stares blankly at it for a second before turning to me. "oh no. No, no, no! Just give me the blue one, you can have the pink one!" I start slowly backing up.
When Lucas sees that I'm backing away from him, he starts walking forward, keeping the space between us even. That's when I take my que to turn and run. I crouch behind the counter of shoes. The guy who was here earlier must have gone to the bathroom or something, he wasn't here now.
I set the blue one down, I was planning on giving this one to him. But after making the remark about not wanting pink, I couldn't resist.
"Emma! You can't stay behind the counter forever!"
"what are you talking about? Of course I can!"
I see Lucas's head peak over the top of the counter. I stand up to see him laying with his stomach on the counter.
"really Lucas?"
"yes really! now help me up before I fall on my head, so I can get back at you for giving me a pink ball."
I pull him off the counter so he lands on his feet. Before I can move away, he picks me up, with one arm under my back and the other arm under my knees. I wrap my arms around his neck.
"now what's the plan? Doesn't seem like you thought this through very well."
And that was when he started spinning. He was turning around so fast it probably looked like we had our own mini tornado. I pulled myself closer to him so he couldn't drop me and started screaming.
After about a minute of spinning, we were both out of breath and our faces were flushed. Me from screaming, him from spinning. I buried my head in his shoulder, laughing. I looked at him, and we smiled at each other, our faces just inches from each other.
"seriously! Just kiss her already!"
He almost dropped me at that remark. I let myself down and looked in the direction of whoever said it. It was one of the 11 year old girls.
"Uhm, we don't do that kind of stuff," stammered Lucas nervously.
"really?" asked the girl innocently. She had long blonde hair and ice blue eyes. She was pretty. " but you guys have to be like what? 15? 16? I'm only 12 and I kiss my boyfriend." after saying this she leaned over to the boy sitting next to her and gave him a quick peck on the lips. It didn't look romantic at all, but if they were happy, then I guess it's okay.
"no, I mean, she's not my girlfriend, we are just friends."
"friendzoned!" all the other kids whispered quietly amongst themselves. The blonde spoke up again.
"well, you two would make an uber cute couple. Just so you know." and after that, she turned back to her friends, ignoring us.
Now that I take a closer look, it seemed that everyone here was dating the person they were with. It looked like a double date with the 12 year olds (not 11 apparently) and the other three pairs of people scattered among the bowling alley were all holding hands, kissing, or doing something showing their affection. That's so sappy!
Whatever, "come on, let's bowl."
Lucas and I played about half the frames, I was winning of course, and I couldn't help but think about how a pair of 12 year olds have a better love life than me. I mean, they were already kissing in public, I've never even been on a date before!
"Emma? You okay? You look kinda out of it," Lucas said, sounding genuinely concerned.
"yea, I'm fine, it's just... You know, it's nothing."
"it's obviously not nothing." he says, sitting down next to me in the sticky chairs.
"it's just, they have a better love life at the age of twelve than I've ever had!" tears start threatening my eyes. What is this? Why am I getting so worked up about this?
"Em, some day you will find someone, don't worry, love always finds a way." he started rubbing my back and pulling me into this really awkward hug since we were sitting down.
"thanks Lucas," I say, putting on a weak smile. "I think im done, I'm going to walk home."
"do you want me to go with you? Or are you wanting to be alone?"
"I'm good, thanks for the offer though." I hug him quickly before running outside and back home. When I reach my home I immediately go to my bedroom and start silently sobbing into my pillow.
