Chapter 2: Casts and Catastrophes

I drive to school with Briar's car tailing Caiti, whose car is nearly rear-ending mine. Jacquelyn and Joselyn are sitting in the back, playing on their phones. Evelyn and Madelyn have been dropped off, and by now, it's probably 4th period; AP Calculus. I'm the smartest girl in the ABC squad. Briadyn will be in surgery for the next: about 17 hours; the doctors predicted. My parents wanted to get the bones that were sticking out placed back into her skin. Then, they wanted a plaster cast. It will be about 8 weeks until she can get her plaster off and just wear a brace. I pull into Lake Wilson High School's parking lot and reside in my painted senior parking spot.

In fifth period lunch, I sit down with the ABC squad and couple of other cheerleaders, Hannah and Isabelle. They are almost pretty enough to be in the ABC squad, but first we'd need a G and an F. Hannah has brown hair, tan skin, and blue eyes, and Isabelle has brown hair, pale skin, and brown eyes. They are, like, so nice, though.

When I arrive at MedCity Hospital, I rush to Briadyn's room. It's Saturday. She just got out of surgery at 3am. Now she's sleeping and on an IV. I stroke her cheek and she wakes up. I shush her and she shows me her bright pink cast. Jacquelyn comes in with Briar. Everyone is talking and talking. Then the doctor comes in with the release note. My mom signs it, and we all go home. Jacquelyn and Joselyn ride with Briar, Madelyn and Evelyn ride with Caiti, and my parents and Briadyn ride with me. Daniella and Emma are at my house, decorating Briadyn's room with the pink and blue theme she's always wanted. I speed down the highway, and pull into my driveway. Briar and Caiti say bye and drive off in their matching Mercedes-Benz's.

"Briadyn," I say, as soon as I shut the door. "Let's get you to your bed. You must be tired after all that anesthesia." That's the signal. I open the door and Daniella and Emma jump out and say surprise. Briadyn screams and sees her room. "You guys! I love it!" Her room has carnation pink walls and there is a teal lace canopy on her pink bed frame. The metal divider has pink-and-teal painted pebbles attached to magnets and hold pictures of her and her friends and sisters. Her desk is pink, with a teal stool. Briadyn hugs Daniella and Emma and smiles. "I love you guys!" She hops and runs around the room. "My cast matches!" She repeats, holding up her cast. I smile and check the time. 12:30. I look over my shoulder and see my father climbing up the stairs with a present. "Where's daddy?" I hear Briadyn ask. He hops in and says, "Here I am!" He hands her the bright green package. She tears it open and finds that same teacup yorkshire terrier hopping up. Briadyn holds it up and says, "It was a stray. We found her at Lorraine's birthday and took her." Evelyn hops in and says, "Her name is Ruby!"
