A young girl names Aleya gets into a accident. She comes out of it with the power to read minds, and the mystery of how she got that power in the first place. She goes on a journey to figure out what's causing all of this to happen, making new frien...
I'm in the building, and I'm terrified. The dark purple walls and gray carpet give the building a gloomy aura. There is a long row of grey desks, a person behind every one. I walk up to one of the desks in the middle. The person manning the desk is Matt.
"Hi, how may I help you?" I freeze for a second, and then remember who I am. I am Angela. "Is Dr. Claire in today?" "She is, I see you've heard about her testing. Let's hope you are lucky enough to be chosen for her experiments."
He takes a phone off the desk. "Doctor, sending another one up." He opens a door to a long staircase. "It leads right up to the experiment room. I hope you have a great time." Matt flashes a bright smile at me. I decide to read him. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Wow, she has a lot of makeup on. Typical teenage girl. I doubt she's going to pass the test, but you never know. Maybe she has a power like Aleya. If I prove that Aleya can mind read, then maybe I'll get a promotion.
Matt must really be ambitious, because he already makes quite a salary from tutoring in our neighborhood. People like Gray are pretty heavy with tips. I can't believe that he told Dr. Claire about my secret. I trusted him.
I strut up the stairs, resisting the urge to turn around and slap Matt in the face. "Wait!" Matt shouts. "You need an escort." Of course I do. I groan. I groan even more, when Brian comes and takes my hand. He leads me up the staircase until we reach huge, white, double doors.
"Is this where I will be tested?" I ask. "Yes," Brian replies. "You better not talk when we go in, we don't want to interrupt the doctor." I nod, and reach out my mind to read Dr. Claire. Then I remember, I can't read her. She can feel me inside her head, so she'll know it's me. I can't let that happen.
Brian pulls open the door. I look inside, and become creeped out instantly. There are corpses of monkeys being picked apart by several scientists. The walls are white, with white tables strewn across the room. There are random science tools all around the room, like you would expect in a lab. Altogether, the whole place is very unorganized.
Brian guides me to the back of the lab, where a white desk is waiting, with one white chair on each side. Dr. Claire is sitting on one side of the desk, on the other, a piece of paper and a number two pencil is waiting.
"Brian, you may go." Brian looks disappointed, but does what she says. He slinks out of the room, leaving just Dr. Claire and I.
Dr. Claire pushes the paper towards me. "Fill this out honestly. It's short and very straight forward. I will talk to you about it afterwards. Please be quick." She is looking me over thoughtfully, as if she can tell what kind of person I am just by my outsides.

"Do you have any powers?" I ask. "I wish," she says. "This study can get me powers. It can get all of us powers."
I circle no on every question. I do not want to be part of any of Dr. Claire's experiments. That sounds way to dangerous. I push the paper back to Dr. Claire, who examines it. She frowns.
"What's your name?" "My name's Angela. My parents named be that because I look like an Angel." Dr. Claire raises an eyebrow at me, the one above her eyepatch, currently covering her gear eye. "Do you have any angelic traits?"
"My looks of course!" I say, and purse my cherry red lips. Dr. Claire looks exasperated. "I'm sorry, but you can't be part of these experiments. You're just not the right person for it."
"Who is?" I ask. "I gave her my business card. She still hasn't come in yet." "Fine then!" I sputter. I'm covering up my nervousness with fake anger. "You'll regret this! Nobody ever turns down Angela!" I storm out of the room, Dr. Claire looking at me carefully.
"Wait," she says. "Come back. I have something that might make you eligible for the experiments." I turn my head slightly out of curiosity. I don't know if I should go. Anything could happen. I repeat what Cody told me in my head. Everything is ok, everything is going to be okay, everything will always be okay. I decide that I need to learn more about the experiments, so I head back to Dr. Claire's desk.
Before I can sit down, Dr. Claire stops me. She hands me a black pill, and a red pill. "Black, or red?" she asks. "What do they mean?" "Black for enhanced strength, red for faster movement. Don't bother telling your parents about these pills, they won't believe it, and I will control your powers at all times."
I frown. "I'll take both." I put my hands on my hips. "Strong choice, little girl. Now run along." Dr. Claire puts the pills into a plastic bag, and and hands to me. I take it and walk, almost run, out of the room.
When I get down the stairwell, Matt stops to talk to me. "How was it?" "It was good." I smile. "You need to come check out." I nod.
"Full name please." I blank. I don't know what my full name is. I say the first thing that comes to mind.
"Angela... Shoelace." Matt gives me a weird look. "I come from a very weird family," I say. "Trust me, this name is usual for us." "Phone number?" I give him Cody's phone number. There is no way I am giving him mine, he'll recognize it right away.
"Thanks for coming in." Matt says. "Thanks for your help," I say. I guess I said that too much like myself, because Matt looks down confused. "You remind me of someone." he mutters under his breath.
I take that as my queue to leave, before things get too out of hand. I walk out the door. I don't see Mimi or Cody anywhere. I walk a little farther down the path"
"Boo!" Cody jumps out of the bushes. I scream, and many eyes turn our way. "Geez, Cody. Where's Mimi?" "Right here. Mimi says. "I wonder how many kids she's given those pills to. She is really set on this whole human evolution thing." Cody says. "Those pills must basically be like steroids. She must not have figured out how to make more readers, or telepathics." I say. "That sounds about right." Mimi agrees.
"I told you we'd get somewhere." Cody says. He grins at Mimi and I. "You girls are so stubborn sometimes." "We aren't stubborn, we just don't enjoy throwing ourselves in the middle of danger like you do!" Mimi retorts. Cody shrugs his shoulders, but his smug look doesn't change. He looks at me, warmth glowing from his eyes
"What am I supposed to do about my sister's boyfriend and my tutor? What if they recognize me next time they see me at home? I read Matt, and I learned that he told Dr. Claire my secret!" I ask. Cody's smile darkens.
"Try telling your mom that you want a new tutor, and tell your sister what you read about her boyfriend. She might be heartbroken, but that's better than being used." I nod at Cody. That was a good response. Maybe he's smarter than I think he is.
"This has been a very very long day for me. I'm going to go home." The three of us walk side by side into the sunset, like a perfect happy ending. This is not the end though, and it certainly isn't happy.
