Chapter 1

“Sucks that we’re not in the same group, Hanna.”

“It really does. I would have never signed up for the camp had I known that we would be split up anyways.” Hanna replied to her best friend, Becky, not happy with the situation.

It was the summer after they had just completed their freshman year in high school and when the opportunity came for them to spend the summer together, they took it up; not knowing that they would eventually be split into separate groups. She was mad that there even had to be groups at all. She hated being stuck with people she didn’t know.

They were at a free three week camp being held at an university 2 hours up north. Since it was free, gave them some school credit, lets them go far away from home, and they got to spend some of their summer together, it was the perfect getaway for the summer break. It was a leadership camp, but Hanna doubted that many of these kids came to the camp for that purpose; like really, who in high school actually cared about leadership?

“Well we’re not entirely separated. At least we get to share a room and we’re only in our groups for some parts of the day.” Becky tried her best to get Hanna to look at the positive side of things since it was only because of her consistent begging that had gotten Hanna to agreed to go to the camp.

“I guess you’re right, but I’m still not happy about it.” Hanna gave in. There was no point in being mad anymore, she was already at the camp and Becky was excited to be there, so the least she could do was cooperate.

“I know, but thanks Hanna for being such a good sport anyways.” Becky gave her a hug and then looked at her watch. “Oh shoot. We better hurry or else we’ll be late.”

With no choice now, Hanna and Becky ran off in different directions to meet up with their assigned groups.

When Hanna finally arrives at the right room, she enters to find that there were already 10 other people in the room. Afraid that she was late, she quickly grabs a seat and patiently waits for the group leader to join them.

As she was waiting, Hanna looks around at her groupmates, which was something she always did since she liked to observed her surrounding. Getting caught off-guard was not something she liked.

From what she had gathered, a few of the students either already knew each other or they had already become good friends since they were huddled together laughing. The others were just as alone and awkward as she was.Hanna was still looking around when the door opened and in came another person.

He was very tall, at least 6 feet tall, dressed in a t-shirt and a pair of basketball shorts. He had blonde short hair that laid flat on his head and piercing blue eyes. He looked around, must have spotted an empty chair and headed towards it.

As he made his way over she noticed that all the other girls’ eyes were now on him. She wasn’t surprise that they were all gawking at him because she too couldn’t deny that he was quite cute. Hanna had to stop herself from looking at him as he walked over and sat down in the seat next to her.

Not long after, the group leader walks in and introduces himself as Rick. He went over the basic guidelines and rules of the camp, what was expected of the them as a group and then made everyone introduce themselves.

Hanna came to find out that everyone there were from all over the state, in different grades and while she had gotten to come for free, there were others that paid to come to the camp. Hmmm..Interesting. I had no idea.

Soon enough it was her turn. “Hi. I’m Hanna Mackni and I will be going into the 10th grade. Something about me? Hmmm..I came to camp because my best friend dragged me here.”
