"A car accident? Oh my God. Is she okay?"
"Yes, she's alright, ma'am. It's our policy to contact her emergency number after something like this happens. She has a few scratches, no need for her to stay here for the day. It might be best for you to give her a ride home."
"Oh my God. Okay, I'm heading over right now."
---
The front doors of the hospital slam open against the faded walls.
Chloe jumps in the waiting room seat. She takes her hands out of her hair and looks up to take a look at the new arrival.
She stands up. "Aubrey."
It's five in the morning. Aubrey looks half awake, but her eyes are wide and alert. She's wearing no makeup, hair in a bun, coffee in hand.
"Chloe!" Aubrey drops her purse on the floor and sets her coffee down.
The girls run to each other and embrace.
"I've been so alone, Aubrey. How did you know I was here?"
"The...the hospital called me. I'm your emergency contact, I guess."
"Oh."
There's a silence.
"I'm scared, Aubrey."
"I know, it's a scary thing. I can't believe it happened to you. Thank God you're okay."
Chloe releases from the hug and steps back. "Aubrey... I thought you knew..." Her bottom lip begins to shake and tears surface her eyes.
"No, knew what? The hospital just told me you got in an accident, I..."
Chloe sniffs and looks up at the florescent lights. "Aubrey, Beca was with me in the car. She's in a coma right now. A coma, Aubrey."
Aubrey shakes her head in disbelief. She opens her mouth, closes it.
She doesn't say anything, she just pulls Chloe in her arms again.
They cry together. They hold each other tight and sway slightly.
"It's just us, Aubrey." Chloe whispers.
"I know," Aubrey whispers back. "I know, but it's going to be okay, Chloe, you just have to stay strong. I'm here with you."
They hold each other until the exterior hospital lights turn on and the hospital begins to buzz to life.
