" Appa ! Eomma ! Let's go to the park! Lets go let's go!" Seven year old Min Jee chanted and pleaded. The man sighed, paper work flooding his desk. He turned to his equally stressed out wife,"A break would be nice." He commented, his voice laced with hope. The woman sighed, her face crumpled up with stress. She looked at the little Min Jee, her eyes gleamed with hope. She smiled and sighed, "Alright... alright! Just for an hour," Min Jee cheered and rushed out her parents office into the living room.
"Appa higher! Push me higher!!" Min Jee squealed and giggled. Her father smiled and pushed her swing harder. "Careful honey!" His wife warned, standing a few inches away from any danger. "Don't worry, she's fine," Min Jee laughed, a loud melody drifted into her ears. "Ice cream!" She gasped and kicked her legs, trying to slow the swing down, however, it wasn't slowing down fast enough. She huffed and an idea popped into her head, without a second thought, she released the chains and jumped off the swing mid air. "MIN JEE!" Her parents screamed, scrambling over to her body. "Eomma! Appa! Can I have ice cream?!" Mine Jee yelled getting up, dusting her pants and hands. Her parents looked at her in terror, throwing dozens of worried questions and examining her small frame. "I'm fiiinnneee! Ice creaaammm!!" She whined, trying to escape. "Min Jee! You can't do that! You could've gotten hurt!" Her mother scolded. Her father sighed and looked at his wife, "The kid only wanted ice cream, she'll be upset if we don't give her some." His wife glared at him, crossing her arms. "We are not rewarding good behavior, you do enough of that at home, don't pretend either because I know!" Min Jee and her father looked at one another, before grinning and slowly approached the poor scared woman. They soon gripped onto her and began mercilessly tickling her. Not too long the woman caved in, and the three happily made their way to the truck.
"I want the sponge bob one!" Min Jee pointed from atop of her fathers shoulders. She squaled in delight when she was handed one, and started devouring the popsicle. The two watched in pure love and adoration, amused by their seven year old. They walked happily home, Min Jee's parents forgetting all about their stressful work, 'if I can bring a smile to their faces forever... I would stay this age for the rest of their lives.'
Min Jee sighed and repositioned herself for the millionth time. Memories of her childhood played in her mind, resulting in a sleepless night. She sat up, looking around the dimly lit room, her lamp providing enough light to see clearly. Her pastel blue walls, her white colored dresser, her pastel pink colored closet doors. Her room decorated through the happy years, pictures of her, her family, and her friends, scattered on the walls. She picked up a small white bunny, it's once soft fabric, now dirty and rough. She stared at the small bunny, running her soft pink tinted tips along the stitching.
The bright flashing lights and loud blaring carnival music excited 10 year old Min Jee. She skipped along, her parents trailing behind her. "Don't go too far, you'll get lost," her mother warned. She giggled looking around, her excited mind running a million miles. She gaspes and stopped, her eye catching a small but beautiful white bunny. It smiled at her, and she smiled at it, "Appa! That one! I want that one," she tugged her fathers hand towrds the small stuffed creature. "Ok Minie~" her father ruffled her hair. He looked at the game, shooting the basketball into the basket, seemed easy enough.
"Honey, we won't have enough to take her on a ride, let's go," his wife sighed. "Just, one more!" He roared, throwing the basket ball as hard as he could. 'Swish' sirens blared and the vendor smiled, strained and forced, "We have a winner!" Min Jee's father smiled and handed the bunny to his little girl. "Thank you! Appa, I love it!" She squealed, hugging his leg.
Min Jee smiled sadly, the memories that once brought her joy, now brought her pain. She arose, her bare feet hitting the cold floor. Goosebumps ran along her skin, she walked over to her pictures, the smiling faces indicated a happy family, a happy life. 'All a fucking lie,' she thought. Her fingers ran along them, carefully, slowly, as if they would fade away. She spot a picture, slowly, she plucked it from the wall. A picture of when she turned two, her mother and father at her side, her friends all cheering and smiling. She smiled and let her cool salty tears fall, she looked so happy, so full of joy and innocence, confident with her parents. 'All lies,' her brain pushed. She put the picture back, as if she was saying goodbye to the happy memories, goodbye to her happy self, goodbye to her 'parents'. She retreated back to her bed, her blanket radiated comforting warmth.
Min Jee placed the last heavy brown box down at the bottom of the stairs. She looked back, the stairs, her favorite place to think or read. She wore a blank, expressionless mask, refusing to miss the home that was never hers to begin with. She dragged the box to the door, memories flashed around her, but she refused to look, to stop and say goodbye. Her father- her uncle rushed up and picked up the box, "I got it," he hummed. Min Jee said nothing, walking past and hopping into the SUV. His wife stood next to him, a pained expression on her beautiful face. They looked at each other, a sigh escaping their lips. "It's for the best, right?" His wife asked. He looked back to the small and quiet silhouette in the car. "Whether it is or not, it's not our choice, they wanted this to happen." He spoke, "I want her to be safe... that life style they lived, was anything but, and we're letting her go in there alone. Unprepared and scared. She doesn't deserve this," he brought his wife close, rubbing her back. Min Jee glanced at the two, pain hit her heart once again, 'They were only doing what they were told, they don't love you.' She huffed and plugged in her blue ear phones. She closed her eyes, her conversation she had with her aunt and uncle from a few days ago replayed.
"My... olded brother?" Min Jee scoffed, her white teeth catching her rosey plump lips in between them. She sat back, she couldn't believe them at this point. She didn't know what was the truth anymore. "Yes, you have an older brother, he lives in .. Korea." Her mothe- her aunt explained. "Why tell me this now?" Min Jee hissed, upset and heart broken. "He told us that he wanted us to tell you once...." her uncle trailed off. "Once what?" Min Jee asked "Once it was time for you to go live with him." Her aunt spoke just above a whisper. "WHAT?!" Min Jee shot up, her chair making a horrible squeak. "It's been ordered by your parents that... once your older brother is ready, he'll contact us and tell us to send you with him." Min Jee scoffed in disbelief, her entire world felt like it was falling apart. She didn't know how to feel, everything was all over the place. She gripped onto her brown hair, trying to process all the information. "Did they ever consider how I felt? What if I don't want to go with someone I never knew existed?!" Min cried hard this time, her knees felt like jello, weak and ready to collapse. "I'm sorry honey, but that's not any of our choices." Her uncle reached out for her, yearning to hold her, to tell her she could stay with them forever, to make her stop crying. She pulled away, "Don't! I can't believe..." she cried. Her aunt grabbed her husbands hand, squeezing it tightly. "A lot has happened, you should go to bed, we'll let you calm down." She spoke, tugging her husbands hand. Her uncle stared into her eyes once more, before letting his wife tug him along. ".... When do I leave?" Min Jee choked out. "You'll leave in a few days, just so we can take you out of school..m and say bye to your friends.." her uncle spoke, his voice monotone. She watched them trudge upstairs, her chest heaved as she sobbed.
"Off we go," Her uncles voice tore her away from her thoughts. The car seemed slow as it carries them towards the city. Min Jee looked outside, the world seemed slow, as if it too, were upset and unwilling to let them be broken up.
