Calculus test.

I wish Mrs. Hackwell just taught science, 'cause I think she knows a lot more about that than calculus.

I looked up at the James twins who were writing faster than lightning.

So lucky.

I looked at you. You tapped your pencil on your knee, trying to force an answer to come to mind.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

My heart skipped three beats.

Everyone screamed so loudly I couldn't hear my own. The principal said something over the speakers, Mrs. H. was yelling at the class, and I was pulled away by the force of hysteric students.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The gunshots were like war drums, but no one was able to fight. Fear fueled my legs and urged me to run.

I looked for you to make sure you were okay, but I couldn't see your face in the crowd. I followed the red-headed James twins as best I could to the staircase towards the exit. Every step was closer to security. I heard officers shouting, "Police! Freeze!" to whoever was shooting.

I kept trying to find my way down the staircase until the gunshots were right behind me.

Until the gunshots were inside me.

My eyes found your face.

I didn't have time to smile.
