Before He Was Mine

The next day I woke up to a text from him telling me how much he enjoyed the night before. Smiling from ear to ear I replied back saying how much I enjoyed it as well. We talked every day all day long.  He became my best friend. He always made me smile and feel like I was worth it. He always boosted me up and was always there when I needed him. Every morning I would always wake up to a good morning text. He was the reason for my smile. The day before the first day of school he asked how I was feeling about it. He knew I was nervous because it was the first day of high school for me. I didn't know hardly any of the upperclassmen other than him and the few in band. He kept telling me that everything would be okay and that he would be there for me. I knew he would be.

On the first day of school I was so lost. I did not know my way around at all. When I got to school I went straight to my locker to put my stuff away before searching for my home room. As I am walking to my locker I see him already standing there. I was confused as to why he was standing there so I asked him what he was doing. He said, "You're a freshman and you are my best friend. I am here to help you get through your first day." Feeling relieved I tell him okay and made him hold my books that I needed for my first class. After I got everything I needed he walked me to my homeroom while holding my books. Once we got into the classroom, he was so stubborn and would not let me take my books back from him. He insisted on taking my chair down and setting my books down for me. Once he made sure I had everything and was okay, he left and went to his homeroom. After the bell rang to go to our first class I walked out the door and to my surprise he was standing there waiting on me again. That whole day he would meet me at my locker after every class and walk me to every class that I had next. At the end of the day when I went to volleyball, girls on the team asked me if we were together. Laughing I replied, "No, we just met a few weeks ago. We are just best friends." One of the upperclassmen then said, "I have never seen him so interested in someone. Last year he was this quiet kid who stayed to himself. He must really like you." Of course I was in denile and thought there was no way.

Every day went like the first day. A month and a half goes by and it is time for homecoming. The Thursday before homecoming my sister had a volleyball game. During warm up I noticed he had texted me asking what I was doing. I was confused because he never texted me that early in the evening, especially on Thursday's because of feed the teams. I told him about my sisters game and asked him why and what was up, but got no reply. As I am sitting there watching the game I see him walk in. I was confused on why he was there. He comes and sits next to me, so I asked him, "What are you doing here." He said, "I have something for you." Looking at him confused he pulls out his jersey from his bag. I smiled from ear to ear and hugged him without even thinking about my reaction. He told me he wanted me to wear it to school for homecoming and the game if possible. I instantly put in on over my shirt to see how it would fit. After I put it on he asked if we could take a picture together. Considering guys usually don't ask to take pictures I jumped at the opportunity. That was our first picture together. We sat together and watched the rest of the game together.

The next day was homecoming day, so as promised I wore his jersey. When it came time for spirit day pictures I just sat in class because none of my friends dressed up. As we sat there waiting for people to come back he walks in and said, "Hey, why are you not in the lobby getting a picture with me?" Surprised to see him there I get up and go with him to get a picture for the school web site. After the picture he walked me to class which was upstairs before going to his class which was downstairs. When it came to time for the game I debated on wearing the jersey under my band jacket. I ended up deciding on wearing it so I could support him. After our halftime show we were allowed to take off our jackets due to it being a warmer night than usual. During 3rd quarter I went to the concession stand to get something to eat and had several people ask me who's jersey I had on and if we were dating. It was like a foreign concept to people to just wear someones jersey and support them just as a friend. After I got back to the band stands I notice him look over at me. I then pulled the jersey out of my bibs so he could see I was wearing it. Once he noticed he smiled and shook his head. That night after the game he waited for me outside the band room. As we were walking into the dance he payed for my way in. I looked up at him and before I could say anything he said, " Well I guess that means your my date now doesn't it." We both smiled and I even blushed a little.  As I danced with my friends he just stood there with his guy friends talking. When Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This came on as the next song my friends went with their boyfriends and I just stood off toward the side. Standing there I see him walk up behind me. He leans down, resting his head on my shoulder and wraps his arms around my waist. Turning my head to look at him he said, "Would you care to dance with me?" Looking into his eyes, I felt as if it was the first time we met. Next thing I knew we were dancing with all the other couples. Being in his arms was the best feeling ever. It was as if we were meant to be in each other's arms. It was like we were the only two in that moment.

After the song was over we stood there a little bit longer just looking into each others eyes. Once we were sounded by people who started dancing to the next song we realized we should go off to the side and talk. I grabbed his hand and we walked back to the spot we were originally standing in. Once we got to the spot my friends grabbed me and said they wanted to talk in the hallway. I looked over at him and he said, "Go have girl time. We can talk when you come back." My friends take me out to the hallway and start freaking out.  One friend just kept screaming, "OMG!" Another friend asked, "When did you guys get together? Why did you not tell me about this? How did it happen? Do you see the way he looks at you, it's so adorable." They acted like they didn't believe me when I kept telling them that we weren't together and that we were just best friends. After I got them calmed down, we walked back into the dance.

I walked back over to him and before I could say anything he said," Let me guess, they asked about us and when it happened?" I looked at him surprised and asked how he knew. He said," Soon as you walked away some of the guys came over to me and asked about it."  I kept apologizing for it but he said it didn't bother him. Before we could talk about anything else, my parents showed up to pick me up. We were both disappointed. When I went to walk away, he grabbed my hand and walked me out to the door of the school. He hugged me goodbye and watched me until I made it safe to my car. When I got home I seen he had texted me saying, "This was the best night of my life. Goodnight beautiful." That truly was the greatest night of my life.
