Once gym was over I had to go to Health. This is the class that only juniors take so I found my way there while Sammy went to her class. When I get there I don't look around I just head straight for the teacher. She fills me in on what exactly we are doing right now and what she expect from me. It turns out we are just starting a new project, Kenzie." she motioned to the only open seat and guess who I was sitting next to. You guessed it! Elijah. He looked at me with apologetic eyes but I quickly looked away as I made my way to my seat. But the teacher continued oblivious to the tension between us.
"So as you all know we are going to be doing the baby assignment. you will have partners and you two will have to learn to work together to take care of the the baby. The babies must be treated like they are real. They have sensors in them that will allow be to see how you handled the baby and that will be what you grade is based on. The person you are sitting by will be your partner so don't ask to change. You will spend the rest of this period trying to get to know your partner so that you can figure out a plan for this weekend. You may begin." she said and went to her desk. Elijah turned to me a just stared without saying a word for at least a few minutes.
"I'm sorry. you don't deserve to be treated like that. I was just mad and I thought that he was your boyfriend and I didn't get a chance to cool down." regret was rolling off him. in waves. all I did was give a reassuring smiles and a slight nod. He relaxed noticeably after that.
We made a plan that I would take the baby home tonight. Then Saturday we would go eat breakfast at the local cafe at 8. We would spend Saturday sharing him and Elijah would take care of him Sunday. After class, Elijah asked if I would go to his house and I surprisingly agreed. We talked for the rest of the period then went our separate ways when the bell rang. The rest of the day passed uneventfully and then it was time to meet Elijah. He was waiting by my locker after my last class.
"Hey," he smiled charmingly, "ready to go?" He then gave me a crooked grin that I'm sure made all the other girls swoon. I just rolled my eyes and started walking towards the parking lot.
"So what do you drive?" I asked when he caught up to me. Elijah shot me another smile, but this one was less cocky and more genuine.
"I think you'll like it," he said, eyes twinkling, " My baby is right here." He stepped in front of my second favorite car (my camero will always be my favorite), a silver corvette.
"It's beautiful!" I said after he unlocked the corvette. We climbed in and Elijah drove us to the store.
"So we need a small pack of diapers, a pacifier, and some baby wipes." I read off the list our teacher gave the class, our fake baby was safely in the shopping cart's baby basket, "The bottle and food for Fake Baby is in the little bag Ms. Miller gave us." I looked to my left where Elijah was two seconds ago to find that he wasn't there anymore. Great. I turned the cart around and started to look through the other aisles.
"Elijah, where are you?" I whisper-yelled, "Elijah!"
"Huh?" I stopped quickly to see the 'missing boy' hiding behind a rack of chips about ten feet away. He had opened a bag and was chowing down while looking at something around the corner.
"What are you doing?" I asked in normal speaking level, pushing the squeaky cart toward him.
"SHH!" Elijah shushed me when I stopped talking and sprayed me with crumbs in the process. Gross!
"Fine!" I whispered irritably, "What are you doing?" Elijah didn't reply because he was focused on whatever he was looking at a second ago. I peeked around and was instantly fuming. Elijah was staring at a teenage girl bending over to stock shelves. That pervert! Before he could react, I was dragging Elijah away from his perviness.
"How dare you!" I yelled at him, "That is so not ok! Now come help me get the supplies so I can go home and get my homework done. And you better pay for those chips"
"You nerd," Elijah rolled his eyes, "live a little." Then he turned away from me, crumpled his bag of chips and threw it behind him. I opened my mouth to nag him some more when someone cleared their voice behind me. I turned and had to look up to see the face of the hulking mass behind me. A store security guard. I gulped and took a step toward Elijah.
"Aren't you gonna pay for those chips, punk." The guard glared at the back of Elijah's head but stopped when Elijah turned around.
"What are you going to do about it, Chuck?" Elijah asked, clearly amused, "Tell my dad?" Then he laughed like it was the funniest thing he had ever heard. I was stunned when the security guard, who was apparently named Chuck, actually cracked a smile too.
"Go on, you trouble-maker," Chuck chuckled, "Get your stuff and go." Elijah did a mocking salute and sauntered away with his hands in his pockets. I stood there for a second to process what just happened before following Elijah as he made his way towards the baby aisle.
"What the hell was that!?" I asked when the cart and I caught up.
"Huh? What was what?" He looked away from the baby stuff to give me a quizzical look.
"Don't ask me 'What?'!" I scolded, "What was that thing with the security guard?" His look of confusion cleared up.
"'Oh! You mean Chuck. He's in my pa-" Elijah cut off quickly, "I mean he is a family friend. Come on." Before I could say anything else, he grabbed all the stuff we needed and headed to the exit, bypassing the checkout completely. The cashiers didn't even blink an eye at the money they were losing. I quickly grabbed the baby and followed him out, confused beyond belief.
"Now what the hell was that?!" I asked again. Elijah sighed when we got in the car.
"Look, Kenzie," he began, "you'll learn soon enough that my family has a lot of pull in this community and it's best not to question it."
"That doesn't give you the right to abuse that pull!" I yelled and Elijah glared at me but didn't say anymore, "Whatever. Just take me home."
We drove the rest of the way in a tense, awkward silence. When we finally arrived at my house I sighed.
"Look," I started, "I'm sorry for yelling at you. And thank you for the ride." Elijah looked over and smiled, all signs of anger were gone from his face.
"It's ok!" he smiled, "I'll see you in the morning!" Then he drove away with a wave. I shook my head and walked inside with Fake Baby.
"Kenzie! Where were you!!"
