Chapter 2: As the Earth Rumbles

One day, two kids who lived in Ely, Nevada were playing on Gilbert Scott Street with a soccer ball during the evening.

One hour later, their mom called them in for dinner, "Samantha and Amarald, you can come in for dinner now," which was fried green tomatoes, corn cakes, garlic buttered shrimp, and corn and bacon casserole.

They rushed inside to see what was for dinner and on their way, racing to see who'll win, they spotted their older sister, Riley, observing through the window as if something was wrong.

Riley turns around quickly and whispers,"What if it comes to our town?" Then regrets what she said and changes her question immediately, so she wouldn't scare her sister or brother,"I wonder what we're having for dinner," she says in a quiet voice. Riley walks away and sits down at the dinner table."I wonder what's up with her," Samantha whispers to Amarald."I told you she's been going CARRIE CRAZY ever since she seen that tsunami thing in Greenland on the news."Amarald replies back in a quiet voice.

As Samantha and Amarald walk away from the dinner table, an earthquake began. Luckily for them, it was a small one and there was no harm to them or the house.

They had an alarm in their house above the kitchen table that makes a terrible noise when the house shakes.

Amarald went upstairs to go write in his journal about his adventures, successes, things he needed to get out of his head, things he wouldn't say, his goals, his memories, his feelings, and dreams.

Samantha and Riley were the dancers so they went into their moms enormous office to dance to their favorite beats and songs.

It was one o'clock in the morning and Riley snuck downstairs to the living room television, made herself some popcorn, and sat on the couch.

While watching the news about the ocean spreading across earth, Riley began writing notes about how she was going to survive when she is soon to be in that situation.

She knew her family was going to be in danger, so she took out five heavy-duty ziploc bag.

In each of them she put an orange, apple, sandwich, yogurt, juice, and water.

She placed all these bags in the back of the refrigerator so that no one will notice them until it was time they needed them.

Riley took a water and put it in the freezer, then headed back upstairs.

On her way into her room, Samantha wakes up and asks Riley what she was doing up at 1:30 in the morning. Riley says quietly,"Uhhhhh...I was just...ummmm...getting a drink of water."

"Oh,well I'm going back to sleep, but you can keep on doing what you...,"Sam says quietly as she falls back to sleep while talking to Riley.

"Okaaaay,"Riley says as she was creeped out by her younger sister.

As Riley gets into bed, she thinks to herself,"We are in danger and no one knows but me. So it is my job to protect them." Before she goes to sleep again, she says her prayer out loud,"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray The Lord my soul to keep, If I shall die before I wake, I pray The Lord my soul to take. Amen."

She lays down and tucks herself in.
