I was walking home from the store that night. Mom wanted eggs and milk to bake a last minute 'Welcome Home' cake for my grandpa who was leaving the nursing home to stay with us as my she could not continue paying the bills. Why she didn't just buy a cake when it was far cheaper than baking one was beyond me.
As I walked along I noticed two boisterous most likely drunk guys had been walking behind me for a while now. I looked back to see they weren't really near but not far. It freaked me out.
I soon realized the street I was on, 21st Elm Ave. There was an alley that had a shortcut to my neighbourhood, so I decided to take it as to get home quicker. But in my haste to get home, I turned down the wrong alleyway and ended up walking longer than I should, found myself on a street that was not mine own; it was very far from it, and the two guys were still walking behind me. I now deemed that they were following me.
I glanced at my watch and realizing that I had been out for more than an hour, I started to walk faster and that was when it all went down.
The men, realizing that their tantalizing target was getting away, started running after me. All hell broke loose in my stomach when I realized this. I ran and ran, my heart having a paroxysm, thrashing against my rib cage, threatening to burst out of my chest. I thought, in that moment, that my assiduousness in athleticism would prevent the debacle that I had currently found myself in.
But that notion was crushed when I felt the weight of someone land on me. I thought I was fearful before but a new echelon of atrociousness held me. I kicked, clawed, flailed and thrashed. I tried to scream, bite and yell for help but this was found to be impossible as my mouth was covered by a piece of cloth. The cloth, I came to soon realize, had chloroform but before I had completely blacked out it was removed.
"I want you to remember this" one of them told me as I tried to blink away the stars and darkness that clouded my vision.
Nowadays, when thoughts of what happened after this come to me, they are clear as day and other times I can hardly remember if it had even happened to me. But now as I write to finally share with you my story, I remember.
I was dragged to an awaiting vehicle, where another man waited, he looked familiar but I cannot place his face. I was driven to an old warehouse where I was to be left to die. I will spare you the ghastly details but I will tell you this, in that hour when my body was devastated, the hope I once had for humankind was quashed. I didn't believe that I would be able to look at another individual with trust, love, friendship or companionship.
And the thing that made it even worse was that under all the blood, the pain and the embarrassment....
I liked it.
