Chapter 6:

Louis' POV:

"Louis! Get up, we have school!" Someone yells in my ear.

"Mmm," I mumble, eyes still closed, and reach out my hands. I try to run my hands over their face to see who it was, but the person obviously didn't get the memo, so they pulled me out of the bed instead. "Never trying that again," I say and open my eyes drowsily.

"We're going to be late because of you," I find Ju saying with her hands on her hips.

"If you were already ready, you could've just walked without me," I point out and wave a finger in her face.

Swatting my hand away, she says, "But I didn't want to leave you."

"Too scary for you?" I ask over my shoulder, making my way to my closet.

"Wha--no! It's just--"

"Juliet," I say and turn around. "You need to find some independence."

"I have independence," she mumbles and crosses her arms over her chest.

"Yeah, you have independence, but not when it comes to me," I say and place my hands on my hips.

"So?" She challenges.

"So, that's not a good thing," I continue.

She laughs loudly and shortly, making a long scoff-sounding noise to echo throughout the room. "I get it. This is why you abandoned me, huh? You wanted me to be independent. Well, good job, genius, I guess your planned backfired. I'm even less independent now thanks to you, and you know it. I'm going to school. Good luck in class because you never did your homework." She spins on her heel, running out of the room and slamming the door behind her.

I sigh, running a hand down my face. She was right--about everything. Even the homework part, dang it.

Never did I realize this would be so hard.

As I walk (read: run frantically) into the school building, the bell for first period annoyingly rings.

"Ugh, no!" I mutter under my breath and speed-walk to my classroom. Luckily, when I showed up, the teacher wasn't there yet.

"Lou, where've you been?" Niall asks and I sit in the desk next to his.

"I had girl problems," I say vaguely, trying to catch my breath.

"Was it that girl, uh, Juliet, was it?"

"Yeah," I answer, "she got pretty ticked off at me."

"Isn't she staying with you for a few months?"

"Yeah, she is," I say, going along with the lie I made, "but I don't know if she'll want to stay after what I did."

"You must've messed up bad, Lou."

"I did," I admit. "Hey, Ni--"

"Sorry I was late class, traffic was bad," our teacher, Mrs. Raven, rushes in and says.

"I guess we both had a bad morning," I mutter to myself.

"Okay, take out your homework from the weekend, I'm taking them up for a grade," she says warily and I prepare myself. Hopefully I won't get in too much trouble.

-

"Detention?!" I practically screamed.

"I'm afraid so, Louis. This isn't the first time you haven't completed an assignment."

"No, please, ma'am, you don't understand! If I get detention, then I get kicked off the football team!" I pleaded.

"I'm sorry, Louis, but this is something you have to take up with the coach, not me," she says and grabs a stack of papers from her desk.

"But you're married to the coach!" I say.

"My love life has nothing to do with the matter, Mr. Tomlinson. Now hurry off to class before I give you another detention."

I nod and rush out of the classroom.

"No running in the halls!" I hear her yell, but I'm too upset to care. I run as fast as I can, out the doors and onto the field. My running was ceased by running into someone.

"Ow!" They moan beside me. I clutch my head in pain.

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask and turn to them. I had never seen her before. She had straight brown hair that went to her shoulders and hazel eyes. And she looked ticked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she says. I stand up, and give her my hand to take. She ignores it and stands up herself. "Watch where you're going next time, okay?"

"Um, sure," I say and just stand there. "I'm Louis."

"Rush," she says and nods at me. She then turns around and walks further down the field.

"Rush," I repeat in utter fascination. The name suited her. I had never met anyone like her before. She sort of scared me, but I...like it? Yeah, I guess I did. I gathered my books, Rush still on my mind, making me forget why I was on the field in the first place. I was supposed to be in maths by now. Then I remembered. "Shoot!" I say harshly and run down the field. I turn a corner to find the door to the coach's office. I burst in, accidentally startling the coach...and his wife.

"Tomlinson, what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in class," Coach bellows.

"Louis!" Mrs. Raven yells.

"I'm sorry, Coach, I'm really sorry," I say.

"Since you're already here, what is it?" He asks and Mrs. Raven slaps him on the arm.

"You see, I got a d-slip from your wife and by the rules, I'm supposed to be kicked off the team," I explain.

"Karen!" Coach shrieks to his wife. "Louis is our most valuable player, you can't give him detention!"

"Lucifer, yes I can," she replies and crosses her arms.

"Please don't give him detention. Give him another chance?" Coach pleads.

Karen rolls her eyes. "Fine," she says, "but any other slip-up and you're out of here, kid."

"Thank you so much," I say.

"You're welcome, son. Here's a tardy pass," Coach says and hands me a slip of paper.

"Thanks, Coach. See you this afternoon."

"You, too, Tomlinson."

And with that, I rush off to maths: the class that I'm the best at.
