M E R C Y ' S P.O.V
The warm sun streams through my bedroom window and blinds my eyes. I turn onto my back and pull up my blanket over my head to cover my eyes. I stay still hoping that I'll fall back into sleep.
"Ughhhhh," I grunt and pull down my blanket from my eyes.
As usual, I was more cranky and annoyed. Tuesday's weren't my favourite mostly because Zara made me join athletic council. Zara said this way we can watch the hot seniors play football while keeping score. My shifts were with Zara, every Tuesday after school. I wasn't always the outgoing one, so it was intimidating watching a bunch of seniors play.
I stand up and make my way to the washroom. After brushing my teeth and washing my face, I walk over to my closet and stare at the hung up clothing.
I pick out a white off-shoulder crop top, bordered at the bottom with lace and a super high waisted pair of black jeans. I've always had a thing for high waisted jeans. I put on my outfit, toss my hair into a messy bun.
I walk into the kitchen and grab my lunch. From the corner of my eyes, I see Mom scrolling through her phone, already in her work clothes. Dad left early again, he left his bowl of unfinished oatmeal on the table. I quickly put the bowl in the sink.
Realizing I was getting late, I grab a banana from the counter and put on my white low cut converse.
"Wait, Mercy!" Mom calls out right as I was gonna step out.
"Yea, mom?" I reply.
"One of my co workers invited us for dinner tonight," she pauses and looks up from her phone. "So make sure not to be late after the football game."
Most Moms would ask their child if they're ok with the plans but mine, I clearly don't have a choice.
"Yea sure, mom. I won't be late." I say.
This puts me into a mood. I don't not like to meet new people and go on visits. I grunt as I step out.
It was super hot and sunny outside so I decide to take the park route to my school. My mom doesn't like me going through this area because of the bunch of trees that cast shadows over the path. She always told me to be careful because, "you never know who lurks in the shadows, kidnappers or creeps murderers." Nothing like that happens here anyways.
I turn around to make sure moms not looking out the window and make my way towards the park. I check my phone for the time and realize I'm running a few minutes late. I pick up my pace.
The dark green trees around me look warm and welcoming, smile to them. That's when the sun decides to hide behind the clouds. I was afraid of this. Just because I like going through here, doesn't mean I liked it always. I always thought of what my mom said.
I notice my laces untied. Walking a little faster, I spot the school clearing into view. Just as I was about to bend down to tie my laces, I hear a twig snap from behind me. I jerk my head around and squint into the dark shadows.
Running full speed towards me was Roman. That's right Roman Sullivan. I rush to move out of his way when I realize he's running away from someone. As he moves closer to me he slows down and puts his finger up against his lips signalling me to be quiet.
"Shhh," he hushes. "Wait."
He grabs my wrist and pulls me behind a big tree. Then he clamps my mouth shut with his hands.
Frustrated that this person I barely know is touching me and telling me to be quiet, I fight back struggling against his grip.
"Let go Roman," I scream. "Stop." But my voice just comes out muffled unable to say a single word.
"Shut up! Keep still for 5 minutes it's for your own good," he assured me. But clearly not reassuring.
I wait impatiently for the five minutes he promised. When I see two police men running full speed across us, unaware of our presence. My eyes widen in shock as I realize what I got myself into.
Once they leave the area, Roman releases me and faces me
"See, it wasn't that bad they're gone," he smiles like if the police men were bunch of donkeys running around.
"What do you mean they're gone?! They're the damn police I'm supposed to feel safer when they're around!" I bark back anger pouring out of me. "You're running away from the damn police and now I'm involved. What the hell Roman!"
"Calm down girl. I saved you," he says like if I'm missing a point. "If they saw you here, they'd probably inquire you about where you saw me go. See now they don't know you were here. Problem solved. Just keep your mouth shut." He has a point.
"Thank you for the help, but I can handle myself," I say rolling my eyes. "Now we're late for school. Oh wait you're suspended. I guess it's just me then."
"Damn you got some steam to cool off," he says giggling like it's nothing. Sometimes I wish he wasn't so good looking, it'll help me control myself.
"Shut up," I say quietly realizing it was true.
"I gotta go now. I'm on a run," he says. He looks both ways then turns back into the sidewalk breaking into a jog. Then sprints. "Bye girl."
"Hey I have a name you know!" I yell after him but he was long gone into the shadows. I sigh as I, myself start to jog the opposite direction towards the school.
Jheez, I have a lot to tell Zara and Savannah today.
