We all waited eagerly for Professor McGonagall who would lead us to the sorting hat. I bounced eagerly in my place.
The doors to the Great Hall opened and we entered as a heard, pushing to see all we could. Two long tables were on either side of the aisle we walked down. I noticed the house of each table by the label on the students.
It was interesting the sort of characteristics each house seemed to have.
The Ravenclaws, I noticed looked us over very skeptically, perhaps picking out possible candidates. The Hufflepuffs were reminiscing and talking about when they came to Hogwarts for the first time. The Gryffindors gave thumbs up and high fives to some nervous looking first years. And the Slytherins, well, lets just say they didn't look entirely interested.
I found Eric, my brother, in the croud surrounded by his friends. I waved to him with a grin. Some one must have told an impropper joke, because his friends burst out laughing and he hid his face under his cloak, looking rather embarrassed. I wonder if he saw me wave.
McGonagall stopped us at the base of a few steps that lead to a stool with a worn hat atop it.
"Oh!" the hat sprang to life and cleared it's throat. Eric had informed me that the hat will come up with a new song to sing to the first years each year .
"Sorting hat, sorting hat.
Wisest all there be
Sorting hat, sorting hat
The sorting hat is me
I go by many names of course
Sorting you seek? Then I'm the source
You'll never find another find a better hat
Any other hat just falls flat
FOR IM THE SORTING HAT!"
People clapped and cheered. I suppose some songs are better than others
"Alright, settle down! we will now be sorting our first years. Adrian, Alex" who was put into Slytherin after the hat was placed on his head
McGonagall went through the A's and I wasn't really listening until she called Sirius Black.
He had acted rather horrid to Severus on the train, but seemed so fascinating. He walked up and sat on the stool. The hat was placed on Sirius's head and started to mumble to him. After a while of that, the hat yelled Griffindor! The corresponding table burst out cheering and cleared a spot for him to sit.
McGonagall went on again but I was staring over at Sirius. He smirked at me and my eyes went wide and I looked away. Embarrassing!
"Evans, Lily!"
Caught in my own daze, I snapped up and cheered loudly for Lily, soon realizing I was the only one. She giggled and walked up to the stool, but I noticed her legs were shaking. The was dropped on her head, and barely a second later, it yelled Gryffindor!
Severus gave an audible groan. The Gryffindor table seemed to fill up in no time. Some names were Lupin, Pettigrew, and that rude Potter fellow from the train. Barely a dozen of us were left to be sorted.
"Snape, Severus!"
I patted Severus as he walked up. Like I had thought, the hat shouted out Slytherin!
He walked off towards the table in the far side of the room. I clapped for him along with the rest of the Slytherins. Eric stood up and made people move down for Severus to sit. My smile dropped as Eric patted him on the back and said something that made Severus laugh. He never told jokes with me, why was he so nice to him? He's not his sibling!
