It was a nice sunny day in the Mushroom Kingdom, it's like today nothing can go wrong. There was no dark cloud in the sky, the birds were singing, and you were peacefully reading a book under a tree along the stone path that led to the grand stone structure of Princess Peach's castle, sitting majestically far behind you in a very green field.
You were really nobody special, despite being one of the only several human beings living in the Kingdom. You were a teacher of an elementary school from the Metro Kingdom who moved, not too long ago, to the beautifully peaceful land of Mushrooms, tired of the hustle and bustle of city life. You still teach, but now to the kids of the humble and rather adorably short Toads, who's village is actually not too far away.
You were then suddenly interrupted by a voice. You look up to find the red-shelled Parakoopa who delivered the Mushroom Kingdom mail. He took out a pink-ish letter from his leather satchel and gave it to you. "Letter for [Mister/Miss] (Y/N)!"
"Oh, thank you." You began to open it as the Parakoopa saluted and flew away. You read the following..
Dear (Y/N),
It's been a while! Wish I wrote sooner, but you know.. the whole Princess saving business kinda set some things back. When duty calls, you gotta go after all!
Speaking of which, I saved Peachy just recently and she decided to have this whole party in my honor, cake and all! So, on my behalf, I invite you to come too. The cake is great!
Your big red buddy,
M, Mario.
'So Mario wants me to come.' You thought. You weren't really a close friend to the red knight-in-shining-overalls, but he apparently thought you as much as to invite to a party held in HIS honor.
You two met while you were trying to move into your new home on the outshirts of Toad Town, and the Italian was kind enough to help you despite being busy being swarmed by his countless adoring Toad fans. The two of you sometimes met after that, talking about whatever came in mind. That's when you found out he had a brother, and he almost constantly talked about him whenever he was mentioned or not. You kind of wanted to meet him and mentioned it to Mario, who then said "He's kind of-a.. well.. shy, but maybe one-a day. He's-a great guy, you'll-a like him."
You were going to pack up until you saw that Mario wrote some more.
P.S, It starts tomorrow at 4:30pm.
You then saw something wrote in the corner of the paper in a different handwriting. It was in neat cursive and in a language foreign to you that you essentially read 'Luigi dice ciao!'. You then saw an arrow that was pointing to said writing, that led to another sentence in Mario's neat chicken-scratch.
P.P.S, Luigi says hello.
You chuckled to yourself, folding the letter and putting it into your (F/C) jacket pocket before continuing to pack up. You have to go get an outfit for tomorrow.
———
You've chosen a semi-classy outfit in colors you'd think Mario would find honorable, red and white. The next day at the set time you went to the castle, to find the party in full swing. Toad servants hustled and bustled while others that are not caterers enjoyed themselves in the food, music, and their long-time hero's presence. You found said red-clad hero near the back, talking with the Princess and, guessing from how alike he looks to your crimson clothed friend, his brother.
You walked up to them, and Mario turned to you with his signature smile that could light up the whole town if he so wished. "(Y/N)! You made it! I-a honestly thought you'd-a be too busy with the kids and-a all."
You shrugged with a slight smile. "Not this time."
"Good to see you're not overworking yourself." The Princess in pink comments in her soft, lilting voice. "I'm glad I don't personally have to tell you to take a day off."
You waved her off. "Bah. You know what they say, it's not work if you enjoy it. The kids are fantastic."
Mario nods in agreement. "True, true." He suddenly lights up in recognition, looking up at you. "That-a reminds me! (Y/N), this-a is my brother, Luigi." He gestured with another smile to the much taller male in green and dark blue. Said male looked between you and him blankly, though, his blue eyes always ended up on you. You think he's just studying you because he never saw you before. He then waved at you with visible awkwardness.
You waved back with equal awkwardness because of how blank he looked. He doesn't seem like the Luigi Mario always talked about. The bubbly, intelligent, brave brother of the more well known of the two. You think maybe he's either deaf or mute, but Mario never mentioned either of those. Then, said Italian came to your rescue.
Getting Luigi's attention, Mario said, "Luigi, dire 'hello'."
Luigi, with a slight panicked look, turned back to you and said, rather roughly, "E-Ello."
Sighing internally in relief that he wasn't what you thought he was, you replied, "Hello."
Mario then turned to you, looking apologetic. "He-a doesn't understand English, in.. case you're-a wondering.. sorry I-a didn't mention it-a before. "
"No no, it's fine." Again you waved your hand as if it didn't really matter. It really didn't. "He's just more handsome than you, I wasn't prepared." You smirked, then when Mario gave you a look that was a mix of question, surprise and hurt, you laughed. "I'm just kidding."
"Sure.."
"Dite loro che voglio sapere il loro nome." Came a soft voice, and it wasn't Peach.
"Che cosa?" Mario turned to Luigi again.
"Qual è il loro nome?" Luigi asked.
Mario then turned to you. "He-a wants to know your-a name."
"(Y/N)." You reply then added, "I teach at the school in town." You looked at Luigi's blank face, then turned to Mario. "Tell him that."
Mario translated for you, and Luigi smiled at you shyly and replied with something. Mario yet again translated.
"He-a says your name sounds-a very nice, and that-a your job is-a good one."
You smiled brightly, replying with a 'thank you' that Mario translated. That earned you a shy look and a nod from Luigi.
"Well," The Princess you nearly forgotten started. "I'll be checking on the cake and see if it's going well. You three have fun." With that, she walked off to the kitchen.
After waving bye to her, the three of you continued to 'chat', with Mario being the translator. Soon the afternoon turned to dusk, and it was time for you to leave as the party got old. You were walking home until Mario, who was going to stay at the castle a bit longer, caught up to you at the gate.
"Hey (Y/N), before you leave, can I-a ask a favor of-a you?" He asked as he lightly grabs your arm to stop you.
You stopped walking. "Sure, what is it?"
Mario twiddled his thumbs together, a nervous habit he usually did when he asked something of someone he thought was too much. "Since.. well.. I'm-a hardly home and all.. and don't-a have enough time to.. erm.. teach Luigi, I-a was wondering if-a.." he trailed off.
"If what?" You asked, raising a brow.
"I-a was wondering if-a you could help-a me teach him English."
