Prologue
"The nursery is so boring!"
A voice echoed in Aspenkit's ears as they twitched at Leafkit's screech that could be heard from WitherClan. Leopardspeck rose up from her mossy nest and shot a glare at her kit, and Leafkit fearfully sat down on his bed, attempting to be obedient. Petalsky gave a purr of amusement at the kit, as Aspenkit rolled her eyes at him. Why couldn't he be silent like Hopekit? She thought, turning her attention to her sister, who was under Petalsky's thick, warm fur.
Leopardspeck gave another glare of anger at Leafkit, as he licked his brown fur swiftly. He finally looked up and locked gazes with her mother, then turned away to look another direction. Obnoxiously, he snapped, "Well, all I wanted to do was to explore out of camp! Patchpaw keeps on bragging that the territory has everything; mice, frogs, and fish! The abandoned badger nest is becoming infested, and adventure is out there!" His eyes glinted with curiosity, looking far away. "Wouldn't it be exciting when I finally become an apprentice?"
Hopekit's fur prickled at the sound of adventure as she tried to shrink into a small furball at the sound of the wildest rogues and the territory. She strolled next to Aspenkit, her fur bristling like thorns, but her ears were twitching at the boasting kit. Leafkit when on and on, and at last, Aspenkit's tail lashed in impatience. She slightly pushed Hopekit a bit, as she shot her attention at Aspenkit. "Let's go outside. I can't stand listening to him brag as long as Patchpaw," she muttered in her ear.
Hopekit blinked, as she lifted a paw in the air, whether to follow Aspenkit or to stay and hear what Leafkit had to say. She trotted after Aspenkit in a moment to the entrance of the Queens den. Aspenkit glanced at Petalsky until her mother tilted her head, and nodded briefly. She bounded outside to the fresh-kill pile, and Hopekit rapidly came after. "Why did you want to leave? I thought it was interesting!" Hopekit protested.
Aspenkit fluffed up her pelt to release the snow that fell from the leaf-bare season. "We can hear that story later once we are appointed apprentices. Besides, we always hear that from Patchpaw! We can explore on our own, not let Leafkit always bother us every single moment," she answered, twitching her ear in annoyance.
Hopekit rolled her eyes and pouted. Without saying a retort, she reached out to the fresh-kill pile and pulled out a scrawny squirrel enough for the two to eat. She gobbled up the meat near the squirrel's tail, and questioned, "Well, what do you want to do? There's nothing else we can do," her head shot up slightly.
Patchpaw keeps on bragging that the territory has everything; mice, frogs, and fish! The wildest rogues and adventure are out there! The voice of Leafkit echoed through her ears. She cuffed her ear with her paw angrily as the bragging sound of Leafkit kept bothering her. She shot up in realization, and murmured, "Let's explore the territory!"
Hopekit nearly burst out the fresh-kill in her mouth. "Explore?" She managed to say, coughing out the prey that choked in her throat. "It's too dangerous! Anything could happen the moment we enter the territory," she explained, her eyes radiating fear.
Aspenkit sighed heavily at her sister. "Like what?" she challenged, her voice edging with annoyance.
Hopekit narrowed her eyes as she listed, "Rogues, adventurous kittypets, badgers, foxes, a patrol of WitherClan warriors, an insecure tree that falls on us, monsters, and death."
Aspenkit blinked at Hopekit in defeat. It was true, anything bad could happen in the forest. She lashed out her tail, making sure Hopekit would agree, "But anything good can happen! Come on, it'll be fun!"
Hopekit glared at her, then inhaled deeply. Looking somewhere else, she responded, "Fine, but if something bad happens, I'm going to blame it all on you!"
