"Toni."Her form behind the door was steely cold. She was planted firmly in the ground with her arms crossed tightly. You could see the veins in her forearms and hands bulging. There was an edge to her right now, one that you weren't overly familiar with, and one that was already driving you up the wall. Shit it was hot, but no you aren't going there.
But you didn't let it get to you, and stood your own ground, still holding on to the pat of anger from before.
"What do you want?"
Toni's brown eyes scanned over you, and you ran cold. The hoodie and shorts you had on were not enough to block your body from her, it wasn't enough protection. Her jaw clenched as she spoke bitterly, making a breath hitch in your throat,
"I see you made it home."
She wanted to see it for herself that you were back in one piece, and filled with an irrational anger about the fact that you hadn't contacted her.
Hmph.
You lean your head on the door, blocking most of yourself from her vision. You weren't uncomfortable with her stare, but you wanted to keep yourself away from her for your own sake.
Why did she look so good when she was seething?
"Yeah, Che-Che , I did make it back," your voice matched hers, coating it with an extra layer of hostility. You could do things on your own, without anybody's help.
A flint of relief flashed through her eyes, and her posture relaxed a little. But, her jaw was still held tight, and her eyes were still intense as she asked you in a low voice,
"Why didn't you text me back?"
You scoffed a little, the feeling in your gut had been right. You knew she was anxious over the lack of response from you, and you were going to reply, before she showed up at your house. Why was she so torn up about you getting home, you could do it yourself, and you always have.
You fucking live in this city for god's sake, and have ever since you were born.
You eased up leaning on the door, swinging it a little with your body as you spoke calmly, recounting your night,
"Well I got home and showered. I didn't see your messages until right now.... And now you're here."
Toni held an expression in her face like she didn't believe you. You could tell that she knew that you had seen the messages prior and didn't reply. She bowed her head in annoyance, her curls falling in front of her face.
You could smell her shampoo, something you always thought had matched her. Her scent always had sweet edge to it.
When she lifted her head, her eyes were dark and she had a smug smile on her face, as she whispered,
"Now, I'm here."
Toni stretched an arm out, pushing the door open, and letting herself in. You didn't say anything and just took a step back, holding your arm as a way to placing something in between the two of you. You heart was fluttering despite your protests; you didn't want to let her in so easily.
She had done you wrong.
You watched as she shut the door, very quietly, actually, and turned back to you. You were kind of glad no one was in the house.
Her eyes were still dark with emotion, but her voice was softer and more like the Toni you knew,
"I was worried about you. I know I acted like an ass, but I wanted to know that you made it back safely."
